Escape Indoors: The New Urban Oasis at the Biodome

When you need a full break from the heat, Budapest Zoo’s Biodome has just the answer. On July 1, the zoo opened its new Urban Oasis, a roughly one-hectare covered exhibit space recreating a lush tropical and subtropical environment, complete with dense vegetation and animal species the public hasn’t seen in decades. The space also features around thirty life-sized prehistoric reptile models, making it a fascinating stop for anyone interested in paleontology alongside the living exhibits.

The greenery here is the real showstopper. Nearly a third of the one-hectare space is covered in plants, grown in 150 specially built planting troughs filled with 1,740 cubic meters of specialized soil. Some plants were donated by private individuals who had simply outgrown their space at home, others were purchased new for around 11.5 million forints, and a significant portion were propagated and raised by the zoo’s own horticulturists over the past five years specifically for this project, representing nearly 50 million forints worth of homegrown greenery. One especially fun detail: the impressive date palms visible inside were originally used as film props by Marvel Studios before finding a permanent home at the Biodome.

City Park is also home to several museums, and on a scorching day, stepping into an air-conditioned exhibition hall is honestly one of the smartest moves you can make.
