Garden of Lights Budapest: A Beauty and the Beast Light Trail at the Botanical Garden

An enchanted rose, a glowing castle and a tunnel of colourful lights: Budapest’s Botanical Garden has stepped into the world of Beauty and the Beast. Running from October 23, 2026, to January 3, 2027, this season’s Garden of Lights transforms the ELTE Botanical Garden into a fairy-tale setting for an evening walk.
Whether you are visiting Budapest with children, planning a romantic night out or simply looking for something a little different after dark, the exhibition offers a chance to swap the usual sightseeing route for illuminated paths and familiar storybook characters.
Step Into Belle and the Beast’s World
This year’s light trail follows the story of Beauty and the Beast through lantern-style figures, glowing scenery and familiar melodies. Along the way, you can discover Belle’s farm, the Beast’s castle and romantic street scenes that bring the fairy tale into the garden.
Look out for Mrs Potts, Lumière and Chip among the illuminated characters. For younger visitors, spotting familiar faces can become part of the adventure. For adults who grew up with the story, the experience has an appealing touch of nostalgia: sometimes a tune or a glimpse of an enchanted household object is enough to bring a favourite scene rushing back.

Rather than hurrying between the larger installations, give yourself time to explore the details. The characters and smaller scenes are part of what makes this feel like a walk through a story rather than simply a display of lights.
Walk Through a Light Tunnel and a Field of Enchanted Roses
The fairy-tale characters share the spotlight with a long, colourful light tunnel, a luminous waterfall and a field of enchanted roses. The roses are a particularly fitting addition, turning one of the story’s most recognisable symbols into a glowing landscape.
These installations also offer plenty of opportunities for photographs. You might stop for a portrait beneath the tunnel, capture the illuminated roses or gather everyone together beside a favourite character. Arriving with a charged phone is a sensible idea: there is plenty here to tempt you into taking just one more picture.
The appeal is not limited to visitors who know the story by heart. The combination of light, music and garden scenery makes the walk atmospheric in its own right.
Extended Opening Hours for the Autumn Holiday Period
For the opening period and the approaching autumn school break, including Halloween and All Saints’ Day, organisers have announced extended daily opening hours from 5 pm to 9 pm. Last admission is at 8:30 pm, and the on-site ticket offices open at 4:45 pm.
The published seasonal schedule gives a 5 pm opening time until November 9, with an earlier opening at 4 pm from November 10. The exhibition is closed on December 23 and 24.
Because the extended holiday hours and the later seasonal timetable cover different periods, check the opening and closing times for your chosen date before setting out. Arriving comfortably before last admission will also give you more time to enjoy the installations without rushing.
Tickets and Warming Up Along the Way
You can buy tickets at the entrance, but organisers recommend booking online in advance to avoid the ticket-office queue. Day tickets are available for a selected date and entry time, while a season pass is offered for those planning to return.
Keep your digital ticket ready on your phone when you arrive to help entry run smoothly. Advance booking is particularly worth considering if you are planning your visit around Halloween or the school holiday period.
This is an outdoor evening experience, so bring a warm coat and comfortable shoes. During your walk, you can also stop at the garden’s plant shop or Bearded Bear Bistro, known locally as Szakállas Medve, for a warming break.
Could This Be the Final Garden of Lights Season Here?
There is an extra reason to make time for this year’s exhibition. According to the organisers, the 2026–2027 season is being delivered solely by the ELTE Botanical Garden, and, under current plans, it could be the final Garden of Lights season at this venue.
That is not a confirmed farewell, but it does lend this edition a particular significance. For returning visitors, it is an opportunity to see the garden dressed in a new story. For tourists discovering it for the first time, it is a chance to experience a Budapest evening filled with enchanted roses, glowing characters and a little fairy-tale escapism.
