Banff Mountain Film Festival
From 23 to 25 September, adventure lovers can trade Budapest’s skyline for towering peaks and remote jungles without leaving a cinema seat. The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour returns to Cinema City Mammut I, screening nine of the year’s best mountain and adventure films over three evenings, in original language with Hungarian and English subtitles. Running since 1976 and now reaching more than 40 countries, the festival has been part of Budapest’s autumn calendar since 2013, prized for stories of courage, friendship, and resilience as much as jaw-dropping scenery.
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
The digitally remastered extended editions of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy return to select Budapest cinemas from 10 to 30 September 2026, personally overseen by Jackson with richer detail, sharper color, and upgraded sound. Cinema MOM screens the films in original English with Hungarian subtitles, while Pólus Cinema, GoBuda Cinema, and Lurdy Cinema show the trilogy dubbed into Hungarian. The films run in weekly blocks rather than all at once, so most visitors watch one installment per visit.
Latin American Film Days
Uránia National Film Theatre hosts the fourth edition of Latin American Film Days from 23 to 29 September 2026, bringing twelve films from seven countries to its grand Díszterem hall in partnership with the embassies of Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, and Peru. The programme moves from Rio de Janeiro and Mexico City to the Andes and the Atacama Desert, with most titles screening only once, including pre-premieres, 35mm classics, and documentaries in Spanish, Portuguese, and Quechua with Hungarian subtitles.
Scandinavian Film Festival
The 13th Scandinavian Film Festival takes over Art+ Cinema from 24 to 30 September 2026, running across two screens with daily showings from early afternoon into the evening. The headline draw is Fjord, Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or-winning drama, screening in Budapest months ahead of its official release, alongside three more pre-premieres and a Best Of section featuring Mads Mikkelsen, Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness, and Thomas Vinterberg’s Another Round. All films screen in original Scandinavian languages with Hungarian subtitles only.

Cinemira Children’s and Youth Film Festival
Hungary’s only film festival built entirely around young audiences, Cinemira runs from 24 to 31 October 2026 across the Marczibányi Téri Cultural Center, the Institut Français de Budapest, and the Dugattyús venue. It combines a competition of several hundred short films and animations from over 80 countries with hands-on workshops covering stunt performance, dubbing, and comic book creation, plus guest appearances from animation studio Digic Pictures and Belgian director Vincent Bal.
National Theatre Live
Uránia Budapest hosts National Theatre Live’s autumn season from 1 September through 24 November 2026, bringing six Tuesday evening screenings of acclaimed London stage productions straight to the big screen in English with English subtitles. Highlights include Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest on 22 September, a reimagined Hamlet on 6 October, and Les Liaisons Dangereuses starring Lesley Manville and Aidan Turner on 20 October, with the season closing in November with All My Sons and The Playboy of the Western World.
Puskin 100 Film Festival
Puskin Cinema marks its 100th anniversary from 25 September through 28 November 2026 with a season-long tribute of rare classics and live-scored screenings. The festival opens with a live-scored Metropolis on 25 September and closes with a jazz-accompanied Gold Rush on 28 November, with highlights along the way including Bicycle Thieves, In the Mood for Love, Once Upon a Time in America, and a centenary return of The Thief of Bagdad, plus family-friendly Hungarian classics on select Saturday mornings.
Budapest International Film Festival
Known as BIFF, the Budapest International Film Festival takes over Corvin Cinema from 24 October to 1 November 2026 for its third and biggest edition yet, with 45 films drawn from Cannes, Venice, and other top festivals alongside fresh Hungarian productions. The opening gala belongs to Radu Jude’s The Diary of a Chambermaid, with further highlights including Lili Horvát’s My Notes on Mars and László Nemes’s Moulin, plus filmmaker talks and panel discussions running throughout the nine days.
