If you’re flying into or out of Budapest this summer, here’s some genuinely good news: Ferenc Liszt International Airport has been busy. Rather than letting the busiest travel season of the year catch it off guard, the airport has rolled out a series of meaningful improvements that will make your journey smoother, faster, and more comfortable — whether you’re arriving for a first visit to the Hungarian capital or heading home after one.

More Parking, More Options

One of the most practical additions landed on 1 June, when the new Relax Parking facility opened its gates. Adding 2,000 spaces to the airport’s long-stay parking capacity, it’s designed with affordability in mind — a welcome option for travellers who prefer to drive to the airport without paying premium prices for the privilege. The car park also comes equipped with nearly 50 electric vehicle charging stations, a nod to the growing number of EV drivers who need a reliable place to top up while they’re away.

Getting from the car park to the terminal is straightforward: a bus runs every 15 minutes, or if you fancy stretching your legs before a long flight, the terminal is also within a comfortable 15-minute walk.

Checking In Just Got Faster

Anyone who has stood in a long check-in queue on a sweltering summer morning will appreciate the next improvement. Terminal 2A has gained seven new hybrid check-in counters, installed in a space previously occupied by retail outlets. What makes them hybrid is their flexibility — they can operate either as traditional staffed counters or as self-service baggage drop-off points, depending on how busy things are at any given moment.

For passengers whose airline supports self-service check-in, the process is now quicker than ever. You can print your bag tag, weigh your luggage, and drop it onto the conveyor belt in just a few minutes — no queue, no waiting for an agent. From there, your bag goes through exactly the same mandatory handling processes as any other piece of checked luggage, so there’s no compromise on security or tracking.

Security Screening: Faster and More Spacious

The security screening area has also seen significant investment, and the changes here are among the most noticeable for passengers. Eight new, longer security lanes have been installed, each designed to allow more people to unpack their belongings, remove their laptops, and prepare for screening simultaneously. The automatic boarding pass reader gates have been repositioned to make better use of the available space, and additional ones have been added to increase throughput.

The result is a system that processes more passengers more efficiently, with a greater sense of space and less of the bottleneck frustration that security areas are often infamous for. Given that Budapest Airport handles millions of passengers every summer, these improvements couldn’t have come at a better time.

Staying Cool in the SkyCourt

Budapest summers can be genuinely hot, and spending time in a stuffy terminal is nobody’s idea of a good start to a holiday. To tackle this, the airport is expanding the cooling system in the SkyCourt — the impressive central atrium that connects the terminal buildings — with completion expected by mid-summer. Two new high-performance air handling units are being installed, giving the building significantly more capacity to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature even on the hottest days of the year. It’s one of those improvements you’ll be grateful for without necessarily noticing it, which is exactly the point.

The Work You Won’t See — But Will Benefit From

Not all of the summer’s improvements are visible to passengers, but they matter just as much. Behind the scenes, the airport has completed a full renovation of its firewater pump house, replacing 40-year-old equipment with a modern diesel-powered pump system capable of delivering at least 45,000 litres of water per minute. This infrastructure supports the fire safety systems protecting the airport’s hangars, maintenance bases, and refuelling operations — the kind of critical behind-the-scenes work that keeps everything running safely and without interruption.

Taxiway G, the aircraft ground routing area covering more than 17,000 square metres, has also been fully resurfaced. The old pavement has been replaced with a heavy-duty subbase and a durable basalt concrete surface, new drainage and lighting systems have been installed, and updated information signage is now in place. Runways and other operational areas have been brought up to standard for the peak summer traffic season as well. None of this is glamorous, but it’s the kind of investment that keeps flights running on time and operations safe — which ultimately matters more than anything else when you’re trying to catch a connection.

Looking Further Ahead: Terminal+

All of these summer improvements exist within a larger context. Budapest Airport is in the early stages of an ambitious long-term development programme called Terminal+, which will eventually deliver a comprehensive overhaul of the airport’s capacity and facilities. The current investments at Terminal 2 are explicitly designed to bridge the gap — ensuring that the passenger experience remains high quality and continues to improve right through until the bigger project is complete.

For visitors to Budapest, this is reassuring news. It signals that the airport is taking its role as the gateway to one of Europe’s most visited cities seriously, and investing accordingly. Ferenc Liszt International Airport has always been a relatively compact and manageable airport by European capital standards, with good transport links into the city centre via bus and — once you’re in town — Budapest’s excellent metro and tram network. These latest improvements build on that foundation and make the first and last impression of Budapest a genuinely positive one.

Whether you’re arriving for a weekend city break, a longer cultural adventure, or an event like a concert or festival, getting through the airport smoothly sets the tone for everything that follows. This summer, that experience looks better than it has in some time.
