It’s precisely this popularity, though, that has put unusual strain on the hill’s trees. FŐKERT, the municipal company responsible for maintaining Budapest’s green spaces, has issued a public appeal asking people not to use the trees as anchor points for workouts, particularly TRX suspension training, hammocks, and slacklines.

The head of FŐKERT’s Gellért Hill operations unit explained that this isn’t a small stylistic complaint — it’s a real conservation concern. Many of the hill’s trees are already in poor condition after years of persistent drought, and the added stress of ropes, straps, and repeated dynamic loading is accelerating damage that can’t always be seen from the outside. Cracked bark, broken branches, and compromised limbs open the door to disease and, in the worst cases, can make a tree structurally unsafe.

Why a Fallen Tree Made Headlines

The warning gained urgency after a large tree collapsed onto a path near a playground on Gellért Hill over the weekend of July 11-12, 2026. Thankfully, the incident happened at night when the area was empty, but the timing easily could have been different. Local resident and nature photographer Cserna Hajnalka, who documented the event, noted that losses among the hill’s older trees are becoming an almost daily occurrence, a trend she and FŐKERT staff have been warning about for years.

FŐKERT staff say they’ve had to intervene in situations ranging from acrobats practicing on tightropes between trees to, in one memorable case, an entire high school class being sent up into a centuries-old oak tree for a group photo, with a teacher reportedly saying the students would come down “once the picture was taken.”

What Visitors Are Being Asked To Do

Gellért Hill sits within a nationally protected nature reserve, which technically means damaging its flora could carry legal consequences under Hungary’s nature protection laws. For now, though, FŐKERT is choosing persuasion over penalties, simply asking everyone enjoying the park to respect on-site staff instructions and steer clear of a few specific behaviors.

Visitors are asked not to attach TRX bands, hammocks, or slacklines to any tree trunks or branches, especially within the designated nature reserve zones, and to avoid climbing trees altogether, since this can snap limbs, damage bark, and stress the wildlife living in the canopy. FŐKERT has also had to politely ask people to take down leftover party decorations, since balloons and birthday banners left tangled in branches, like those recently spotted in the oak trees near the Jubileumi Park steps, add unnecessary weight and clutter to already fragile limbs.

None of this means fitness fans and celebration-seekers should avoid the hill — quite the opposite. FŐKERT staff have been clear that Gellért Hill belongs to everyone, and they’re genuinely glad so many people choose it as their go-to spot for exercise, relaxation, and memorable photos. The ask is simply to bring your own portable equipment, such as freestanding pull-up bars or resistance bands that don’t require tree anchoring, and to celebrate birthdays or gatherings without decorating the trees themselves.

For tourists exploring Budapest, Gellért Hill remains an unmissable stop, offering panoramic views of the Danube, the Buda Castle, and Pest’s skyline, alongside the historic Citadella fortress at its summit. Nearby green spaces like the Buda Arboretum at the foot of the hill, or Margaret Island further along the river, offer similar natural beauty with sports tracks and open lawns better suited to more intensive workout routines. Choosing these alternatives, or simply exercising on the ground rather than in the branches, helps ensure Gellért Hill’s shade trees remain standing for the next generation of visitors, families, and school groups who come to enjoy them.
