Last Chance to See 70 Lights at Budapest City Hall

70 lights

There’s still time to catch a striking evening installation in the heart of Budapest—but only until November 4. 70 Lights – In Memoriam 1956 transforms City Hall Passage into a walk-through memorial, with seventy beams reaching towards the night sky. Marking the 70th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution, it offers visitors a moving encounter with the city’s history through light, sound and remembrance.

Step Inside a Monumental Light Installation

Rather than watching from the sidelines, you can walk through the illuminated space and experience the composition from within. Seventy individual light sources come together along the passage, representing the seven decades since the revolution and evoking the strength of the uprising, the longing for freedom and the memory of its victims.

Historical radio recordings add another dimension to the experience, while an accompanying exhibition brings the events of 1956 into focus. Together, they make this more than a striking sight on an evening stroll: it’s an opportunity to connect with a chapter of Budapest’s past that continues to shape the city.

A Tribute to Hungary’s 1956 Revolution

The installation honours those who lost their lives during the revolution and the reprisals that followed. Its final evening, November 4, coincides with Hungary’s national day of mourning, which remembers the Soviet military intervention that crushed the uprising in 1956.

For visitors unfamiliar with this history, the installation offers an atmospheric introduction. Although visually impressive, this is a place for reflection rather than a festive light show, giving it a distinctly different character from Budapest’s other after-dark attractions.

Catch It Before the Lights Go Out

70 Lights is open at City Hall Passage, within Budapest City Hall, from 5 pm to 10 pm each evening through November 4, 2026. With the installation closing on Wednesday night, November 3 and 4 are your remaining opportunities to experience it.

Make it a stop on your evening itinerary and leave time to walk through the space, listen to the recordings and explore the exhibition. This is a fleeting addition to Budapest’s cultural calendar—one worth catching before the lights go out.

A Quick Safety Note Before You Visit

The installation uses high-intensity laser lights, so avoid looking directly into the beams or their sources. Visitors with children should also keep them off their shoulders within the installation to prevent lifting them into the path of the lights.
