Genesis Budapest: A Light and Music Show in a Historic Church

What happens when a centuries-old story meets contemporary visual art? From November 2026, Genesis will transform the Church of St. Francis of Assisi on Budapest’s Bakáts Square into an immersive setting for light, music and moving images. Inspired by the story of creation, this 30-minute show invites you to slow down, take a seat and watch the church’s walls and ceiling come to life.
For visitors looking beyond Budapest’s familiar sightseeing stops, Genesis offers a different way to experience one of the city’s historic buildings. It could make a memorable evening out with a partner or friends, or a short cultural stop during a city break.

What to Expect from the Show
Created by PROJEKTIL, Genesis uses projections, animation and music to interpret its creation-inspired theme. Images sweep across the walls and ceiling while the soundtrack shapes the mood, making the architecture part of the performance rather than simply its backdrop. According to the organisers, the show has welcomed more than two million visitors worldwide before its Budapest run.
There is no route to follow or tour group to keep up with. Once you have chosen a seat, you can spend the performance looking up and taking in the changing colours, shapes and sounds. The show is strongly visual, so visitors with hearing impairments can still enjoy its imagery. It is not recommended for people with photosensitivity, however, because of the lighting effects.
Discover the Church on Bakáts Square
The venue gives Genesis much of its character. The Church of St. Francis of Assisi stands in the middle of Bakáts Square in Ferencváros, Budapest’s District IX. Designed by Hungarian architect Miklós Ybl and built between 1867 and 1879, the neo-Romanesque church provides a dramatic canvas for the projections.
Best deals of Budapest
Instead of visiting the church only to admire its architecture in daylight, you will see its interior reimagined through a contemporary artwork. It is an appealing contrast if you enjoy both Budapest’s historic places and its cultural events.
Tickets and Practical Tips
Tickets are due to go on sale through Fever on 7 October 2026 at noon. The event is scheduled to begin in November, but a full performance calendar and ticket prices have not yet been provided. Tickets may also be available at the venue during opening hours for the next performance, provided it has not sold out.
Arrive 10–15 minutes before your booked session. You cannot enter much earlier if a previous performance is still underway, but arriving on time matters: latecomers can enter and watch the remainder of the show, though they will miss its opening minutes. You do not need a printed ticket; the QR code on your phone is enough.
You may take photos and videos during the performance, but keep your flash off so you do not disturb other visitors. Tripods and professional photography equipment are not allowed. There are no toilets or dedicated parking spaces at the church, so plan accordingly and consider using public transport.
The event information contains conflicting accessibility details. Its overview describes the venue as wheelchair accessible, while its FAQ says there is no step-free entrance or accessible toilet and advises visitors to ask staff for assistance. If you need wheelchair access, contact the organiser before buying a ticket rather than relying on either statement alone.
