Halloween with a creative twist

Beautifully carved pumpkin lanterns are the stars of the evening, with visitors invited to display their creations around the square for everyone to enjoy. Come with friends, bring the family or simply stop by to see the designs and soak up the festive atmosphere.

You don’t need to bring a pumpkin to join in. Costumes are welcome too, so feel free to get creative with your Halloween look. For tourists spending Halloween in Budapest, this is a chance to take part in a community gathering rather than a commercial Halloween attraction. There’s no admission charge, and commercial activity is not permitted during the festival.

Bring a donation

Giving is at the heart of the Pumpkin Lantern Festival. Alongside your pumpkin—or instead of one—you can bring non-perishable food to support the work of the Children’s Nutrition Foundation, known locally as the Gyermekétkeztetési Alapítvány.

Suggested donations include sugar, cooking oil, beans, lentils, pasta, canned food, jam, rice and sweets. Even a few items picked up during your stay can contribute to the collection. Please do not bring homemade food, as the organisers cannot accept it under the applicable legal requirements.

Foundation staff will receive donations in the middle of the square, at the base of the monument, and distribute them to families in need after the event.

Getting there and taking part

Heroes’ Square stands at the end of Andrássy Avenue, beside City Park. Take the yellow M1 metro line to Hősök tere—the Hungarian name for Heroes’ Square that you’ll see on transport signs and maps. Its location makes the festival easy to combine with an afternoon exploring City Park before the 7 pm start.

You’re welcome to place your carved pumpkin around the square for visitors to admire, but please take it home when the festival ends at 9 pm. The organisers also ask adults to make sure young children do not climb onto the monument and to look out for one another throughout the evening.

Whether you arrive in costume, carrying a carefully carved lantern or simply bringing a food donation, the Budapest Pumpkin Lantern Festival offers a welcoming way to celebrate Halloween while helping others.
