Hollywood Returns to Budapest: Iconic Chain Bridge Closed for Filming

Budapest is once again transforming into a Hollywood set this weekend, with the iconic Chain Bridge and a section of the Pest lower embankment closed for filming. While the exact production remains undisclosed, the city is currently hosting several international stars, including Keanu Reeves and Emilia Clarke, both of whom have recently arrived in Hungary.
Traffic Disruptions and Public Transportation Changes
The Budapest Transport Center (BKK) has announced that the Chain Bridge will be closed from Friday midnight until 4 AM on Monday. Additionally, the lower embankment on the Pest side between Eötvös Square and Jászai Mari Square will be inaccessible during this period.
To accommodate these closures, several bus routes will be modified:
- Routes 16, 105, 178, 210B, and 216 will be rerouted via the Elizabeth Bridge
- Routes 916 and 990 will also use the Elizabeth Bridge, bypassing Deák Ferenc Square, Hild Square, and Széchenyi István Square
- Temporary stops will be established at various locations to minimize disruption

Star-Studded Productions in Budapest
While the specific film being shot on the Chain Bridge remains a mystery, two major productions are currently underway in Budapest:
- Keanu Reeves is in the city filming “The Entertainment System is Down,” a satirical black comedy directed by Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund. The movie, which also stars Kirsten Dunst and Daniel Brühl, is reportedly being shot at Hungexpo, where a replica airplane interior has been constructed.
- Emilia Clarke, known for her role in “Game of Thrones,” is working on a historical thriller series called “Ponies” alongside Haley Lu Richardson. Clarke has been spotted around Budapest, even sharing a post from a local nail salon.
Budapest: A Hollywood Favorite
This is not the first time Budapest has served as a backdrop for major international productions. The city’s stunning architecture, versatile locations, and film-friendly infrastructure have made it a popular destination for filmmakers from around the world.
As the cameras roll this weekend, locals and visitors alike may catch glimpses of movie magic in the making. While the Chain Bridge closure may cause some temporary inconvenience, it’s a small price to pay for Budapest’s continued role as a star on the global film stage.
