Liszt Picnic 2026 – Free Outdoor Music Festival

If you happen to be in Budapest on May 16, 2026, you’re in for a real treat — and it won’t cost you a single forint. The Liszt Picnic is a free, all-day open-air celebration of classical music, live performances, food, and fun, set on one of the city’s most charming squares, Liszt Ferenc tér. Running from 10:00 to 19:00, this is the kind of spontaneous, sun-soaked cultural experience that makes Budapest such a special destination.
What Is the Liszt Picnic?
The Liszt Picnic is organized by the Franz Liszt Academy of Music — one of Europe’s most prestigious music institutions — as a way to throw open its doors to the general public and celebrate its upcoming autumn season. Think of it as the Academy stepping outside: a proper concert stage is built right on the square, and music fills the air from morning until evening. It’s a rare opportunity to experience world-class classical and jazz performances in a completely relaxed, outdoor setting, free of charge.
The event is also where the Academy officially announces its 2026 autumn season programme and, for the first time in many years, offers season passes for sale. If you’re a music lover planning a longer stay in Budapest, this is a great moment to stock up.
The Performers
The lineup is a wonderful mix of established artists and talented students from the Academy’s vocal, wind, percussion, and jazz departments. Hosted by actor Magyar Bálint, the day’s performances include:
- Balázs János performing Liszt’s Fountains of the Villa d’Este, Wagner–Liszt’s Liebestod, and the 6th Hungarian Rhapsody
- Farkas Gábor closing the evening with a dedicated Liszt programme
- Simon Izabella and Karasszon Eszter in a chamber music set featuring Debussy, Mozart, and Reger
- 3B — a string trio performing Carpathian Basin folk music
- Bédy Levente’s jazz band bringing a contemporary flavour to the afternoon
- Chamber ensembles performing works by Brahms, Monteverdi, Allegri, Purcell, Hindemith, Steve Reich, and more
Whether you’re a lifelong classical music fan or simply curious, the variety on offer means there’s something to enjoy at every hour of the day.

It’s the kind of relaxed, European square atmosphere where you can grab a coffee, find a shady spot, and let the music drift over you.
