What’s New at Budapest Airport: Travel Updates for International Visitors

When you cross the border for the first time under the new system, authorities will create an individual file containing your passport information, the date and location of your border crossing, a facial photograph, and fingerprints from four fingers. Budapest Airport is preparing with self-service kiosks for pre-registration, additional staff, and upgraded equipment including document readers, fingerprint scanners, and facial recognition devices. However, expect initial waiting times at passport control to increase, especially during the first few months as everyone adjusts to the new procedures. Airport authorities recommend arriving earlier than usual for international flights.

Looking ahead, another system called ETIAS will launch in late 2026, requiring visa-free tourists to apply online for travel authorization at a cost of twenty euros, valid for three years. Think of it as similar to the ESTA system for entering the United States.
