Margaret Island Musical Fountain: Budapest’s Free Water Show Gets a New Soundtrack for 2027

The Margaret Island Musical Fountain Returns on May 19 in 2025

Some Budapest attractions ask you to buy a ticket, book a time slot and arrive with your sightseeing schedule firmly under control. The Margaret Island Musical Fountain takes a more relaxed approach: come along, find a spot and let the water do the dancing.

One of Budapest’s best-loved free attractions is preparing for a musical refresh in 2027, with 20 newly selected songs receiving their own choreographed water displays. Thousands of people took part in the public vote, choosing a soundtrack that brings together international pop favourites, contemporary Hungarian artists and songs likely to have you quietly singing along before you realise it. Technical improvements are also planned, promising better sound and an even more impressive show when the fountain returns in spring.

Budapest Has Chosen Its Next Fountain Favourites

The new selection emerged from a public vote on the city’s Énbudapestem website, where participants could express their preferences on 50 proposed songs. The 20 most popular choices will join the fountain’s musical programme for the 2027 season, with specialist company Ganz Hydro creating new water choreography in cooperation with the fountain’s operator, BKM’s FŐKERT division.

The clear winner was Zara Larsson’s “Lush Life”, which received positive votes from around 64% of participants. Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful” followed with 61%, while Hungarian artist Beton.Hofi took third place with “Bagira” at 59%. Carson Coma’s “Purgatórium” narrowly missed the podium, receiving 58%, the same rounded percentage as Harry Styles’s “As It Was”. These figures reflect support for individual songs, rather than shares of a single vote divided between the candidates.

For visitors, the result is a pleasingly mixed soundtrack. You might arrive recognising the international hits and leave with a Hungarian song you want to look up later.

From “Mr. Brightside” to “Flowers”: What Will Be Playing?

The new repertoire has plenty of familiar names. Billie Eilish’s “BIRDS OF A FEATHER”, Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now” and Miley Cyrus’s “Flowers” all made the selection, alongside One Direction’s “Story of My Life” and Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things”. Harry Styles will bring his own contribution with “As It Was”, while Lana Del Rey adds a more cinematic mood with “Young and Beautiful”.

There is no shortage of upbeat material, either. David Guetta and Kid Cudi’s “Memories” joins Gigi D’Agostino’s “L’Amour Toujours” and Ricchi e Poveri’s “Sarà perché ti amo”. Natasha Bedingfield’s “Unwritten”, The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” and Florence + The Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over” should provide ample opportunity for spectators to discover that they do, in fact, remember the chorus.

Rounding out the 20-song selection are Tame Impala’s “Dracula”, RAYE’s “WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!”, Vance Joy’s “Riptide” and Azahriah’s “Pannónia”. Together with Beton.Hofi and Carson Coma, Azahriah gives international visitors a chance to hear contemporary Hungarian music as part of the show, rather than an exclusively international greatest-hits programme.

The Old Favourites Are Staying, Too

A fresh soundtrack does not mean the fountain is abandoning everything visitors already enjoy. The section created for Budapest’s 150th anniversary will remain part of the programme, while the children’s music and classical blocks will also gain new pieces.

That variety is part of the attraction. The fountain is not designed around one musical taste or one age group: its changing programme can move between family-friendly songs, classical compositions and pop hits. The 2027 additions will broaden that mix rather than turn every performance into the same 20-song concert.

More Than Background Music in a Park

The appeal of the Musical Fountain lies in the way the water responds to the soundtrack. Jets rise, fall and change formation in choreography created for the music, turning a familiar song into something you can watch as well as hear. After dark, lighting and film projections add another dimension to the experience.

Daytime visits make an easy pause during a walk around Margaret Island. Evening performances offer a different atmosphere, as the illuminated water becomes the focus against the darker park surroundings. Neither requires an entrance ticket, which makes the fountain a particularly welcome addition to a Budapest itinerary when you want something memorable without another admission fee.

The planned technical renewal should give visitors another reason to return in 2027. Alongside the new repertoire, the operator is preparing improved sound, refreshed equipment and more spectacular water choreography. These are plans for the coming season, rather than changes already available to watch.

Where to Find the Margaret Island Musical Fountain

The fountain stands near the southern end of Margaret Island, a short walk from the island entrance at Margaret Bridge. That makes it a convenient first stop when arriving from the city centre, or a natural final pause before heading back across the bridge.

Trams 4 and 6 stop on Margaret Bridge beside the island access, allowing you to continue on foot towards the fountain. Once there, you can build your visit around a leisurely island walk rather than treating the show as an isolated sightseeing stop.

If your schedule allows, leave yourself enough time to linger. Part of the pleasure is having a reason to stop rushing between landmarks and simply enjoy a little music in the middle of the city.

When Will the Fountain Reopen in 2027?

The renewed fountain is expected to return in spring 2027, with the refurbishment announcement pointing to an early-May restart. Its usual season runs from May through October, but an exact reopening date and the detailed 2027 performance timetable should be checked closer to your visit.

For anyone planning a Budapest trip next spring or summer, this is an easy attraction to keep in mind: a free outdoor show, a green island setting and a soundtrack chosen with local input. Whether you come for Zara Larsson, stay for Lana Del Rey or discover your first favourite Hungarian artist, Margaret Island’s fountain is preparing to give your sightseeing break a rather good backing track.
