Rakpart Opening 2026: Car-Free Danube Riverside

RAKPART 2025 Closing Weekend: Last Chance to Experience Budapest's Car-Free Riverside

Budapest’s favorite spring kickoff on March 14

Hey, Budapest visitors—imagine kicking off your city break with a vibrant, free riverside party right along the stunning Danube. On May 1, 2026, the beloved Rakpart project celebrates its 5th season by turning the lower Pest embankment car-free once again, starting with the traditional community painting of tables and benches. This season brings exciting expansions, longer hours, and a new barrier system to make the Danube banks even more inviting for everyone from families to festival-goers.

Bigger space, two vibes, and more fun

The Rakpart stretches from the Erzsébet Bridge to the Chain Bridge and now expands toward the Parliament along the Antall József rakpart, doubling the fun zones for pedestrians, cyclists, and chill seekers. The Jane Haining rakpart keeps its lively energy with cultural events, pop-up bars, and buzzing community vibes—perfect for soaking up live music, street food, and Danube sunsets. Meanwhile, the Antall József section becomes a calm oasis for sports and relaxation, with running paths, yoga spots, ping-pong tables, grills, and lounging areas where you can just unwind by the water.

Open from May until October 23 (excluding national holidays), the embankment transforms into one of Budapest’s top outdoor hangouts, drawing nearly 20,000 visitors per peak weekend day—rivaling City Park or Margaret Island. Weekdays from May to September feature a smart new barrier system: cars allowed until around 18:00, then it’s all yours for evening strolls, bike rides, or picnics with epic parliamentary views.

Why Rakpart is a must for tourists

This isn’t just a road closure—it’s Budapest’s urban beach, blending green spaces, sports, and nightlife into a pedestrian paradise. For travelers, it’s an easy way to experience authentic local life: join painting sessions on opening day, grab a craft beer from pop-up spots, or watch the city lights sparkle over the river. It’s family-friendly, budget-free, and photogenic as heck, making it ideal for your Budapest spring events list or a relaxed alternative to crowded thermal baths.

With its mix of action and calm, Rakpart shows off the Danube’s full magic, helping you create those Insta-worthy memories while discovering why locals and visitors alike flock here year after year.
