Moxy Budapest Downtown: Hungary’s First Moxy Hotel Opens in the Heart of the Party District

Budapest has a new address for travelers who want more than just a place to sleep. Moxy Budapest Downtown, Hungary’s first Moxy hotel, officially opened its doors on May 14, 2026, in the vibrant VII. district — right on Kazinczy Street, the beating heart of the city’s legendary ruin bar scene. With 281 rooms and a personality as bold as the neighborhood around it, this isn’t your average hotel opening.
A Landmark Project Years in the Making
The hotel is the result of a decade-long vision by the Hungarian-founded Forestay Group, and it stands as the largest internationally branded hotel development in Hungary since the country’s political transition in 1990. That’s no small feat. Co-founder Bálint Botos and his partner Péter Németh decided back in 2018–2019 to bring Marriott’s Moxy lifestyle brand to Budapest, convinced that the city’s growing tourism scene was missing a hotel aimed squarely at younger, experience-hungry travelers.
Getting there was anything but straightforward. Németh recounted at the grand opening how it took four years alone just to acquire all ten separate plots of land needed to create the development site. The design team went through 25 different building concepts before Marriott handed over a 700-page Moxy specification document — which meant starting the design process all over again. During construction, workers unearthed an entire buried truck underground, discovered a neighbor’s illegally built bathroom extending onto their property, and had to bring in around 2,000 concrete mixer trucks to deliver 12,000 cubic meters of concrete — because the tight inner-city location meant articulated lorries couldn’t even enter the street.
Despite all this, the actual construction was completed in just 18 months, and the hotel passed Marriott’s notoriously strict Fire & Life Safety audit on the very first attempt — something only 5% of hotels globally manage to achieve.
Where Budapest’s History Meets Bold Design
The site has its own story to tell. The hotel was built on the former home of the Hungarian Dance Academy, and the design — conceived by Austrian firm BWM Designers & Architects — pays homage to that heritage in wonderfully creative ways. Original Parisian ballet shoes hang in the lobby. Ballet barres line the elevator walls and the fitness room. The building’s past lives alongside its present rather than being erased by it.
But the design references don’t stop there. Yellow stripes running beneath the exposed ceiling pipes trace the route of the city’s beloved little underground railway, the M1 line, the oldest metro in continental Europe. Street art and graffiti bring the energy of Budapest’s ruin bar culture indoors, while playful contemporary paintings of Queen Elisabeth — Sisi — give the interiors a uniquely local wit. One canvas shows her riding a modern sports vehicle, a cheeky nod to her famous love of horses that carries right through to the rooftop bar’s name.
Check In at the Bar — Seriously
The Moxy experience begins the moment you walk through the door, and it begins at Bar Moxy. Forget the traditional front desk — guests check in at the bar counter and are handed a welcome cocktail as part of the process. It sets the tone immediately: this is a hotel that takes fun seriously.
The lobby is bright, open, and deliberately social. Plug & Meet zones offer ergonomic seating, writing walls, and large screens for co-working or informal meetings, while a dynamic video wall adds visual energy to the communal space. Food and drinks are available around the clock, from cocktails and local beers to continental buffet breakfast each morning. The philosophy here is simple: the hotel’s shared spaces belong to everyone, and guests are encouraged to settle in wherever feels right — whether that’s working on a laptop, catching up with friends, or simply soaking up the atmosphere.
Smart Rooms, Spectacular Views
Guest rooms follow the brand’s signature “small but smart” approach. There are no wardrobes, desks, or minibars — but every essential comfort is covered, including 42-inch flat-screen TVs, built-in USB ports, and complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi. The rooms are cleverly designed to maximize the feeling of space while keeping things functional and fresh.
The undisputed highlight of the hotel, however, is the Saddle & Sky Budapest rooftop cocktail bar. Inspired by Sisi’s lifelong passion for horse riding, the terrace offers sweeping panoramic views stretching all the way to Gellért Hill — the kind of Budapest sunset backdrop that makes for unforgettable evenings. Additional street-level dining and gastronomy concepts are planned to follow in the coming months.
Built with the Future in Mind
Moxy Budapest Downtown isn’t just stylish — it’s sustainable. The project holds a BREEAM Excellent certification, backed by energy-efficient mechanical systems, solar panels, and more than 80 electric vehicle charging points. The developers also planted 81 mature trees and over 10,000 perennial plants and shrubs along Kazinczy Street, making a genuine contribution to the neighborhood’s green spaces.
The hotel also features a 24-hour fitness center and two meeting and event spaces, making it equally well-suited for business travelers looking for a base with character.
The Moxy Brand Comes to Budapest
Marriott launched the Moxy brand in Milan in 2014, and it has since become the group’s fastest-growing lifestyle label, with more than 300 properties around the world. Moxy Budapest Downtown is managed by Sófalvi Rita — or “Captain,” as the brand prefers — a hospitality veteran with two decades of senior management experience, most recently as director of LUA Resort on Lake Balaton.
As for what comes next: Budapest won’t have to wait long for a second Moxy. Forestay Group is already developing another property on Váci Street in the V. district, this time converting a former office building, with an opening planned for spring 2027.
For now, the first Moxy Budapest Downtown is open for business — and it’s already one of the most exciting new hotels to land in the Hungarian capital in a generation. Whether you’re here to explore the ruin bars on your doorstep, sip cocktails above the rooftops, or simply need a smart, social base for your Budapest adventure, this hotel was made with you in mind.
