Budapest's Iconic Cable Rides: Funicular and Chairlift Updates for 2026

From February 1, 2026, Budapest’s Buda Castle Funicular and Zugliget Chairlift introduce a more flexible ticket system with one-way options returning, all tickets valid for a full year, and easier planning for weather or mixed itineraries. These updates make it simple to hop on for quick views or full-day escapes without ticket confusion.

Riding the Buda Castle Funicular: History Meets Effortless Views

Since 1870, the Buda Castle Funicular has linked Clark Ádám tér on the Danube to the Castle District, climbing 50 meters in 95 seconds as a UNESCO-listed highlight. Destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in the 1980s, its Gellért and Margit cars operate like a gentle seesaw with safety brakes, offering prime views of the Chain Bridge, Parliament, and river.

It runs daily 8:00-22:00, every 5-10 minutes (demand-based), closing for maintenance on odd-week Mondays. Reach the lower station via bus 16/105 or tram 19/41 near the Chain Bridge; upper via bus 16/16A/116.

Ticket prices and types (from Feb 1, 2026):

  • Full-price one-way: 4,500 HUF
  • Full-price return (one up, one down): 5,500 HUF
  • Child (3-14 years) one-way: 2,000 HUF
  • Child (3-14 years) return: 3,000 HUF
  • “Itthoni” domestic (Hungarian address card, at counter): ~half price
  • Under 3: Free
  • Funicular + Boat combo (full-price, 30 days): 7,000 HUF
  • Budapest Card Plus: Free return (on-site pickup)

Soaring on the Zugliget Chairlift: Treetop Escape to János-hegy

Opened in 1970 as Hungary’s first passenger cableway, the Zugliget Chairlift covers 1,040 meters from Zugliget to János-hegy (262m rise) in 12 minutes. With Austrian cables, local pylons, and a spotless safety record, its 102 double chairs include backups and recent top-end upgrades like accessible viewpoints.

Daily except even-week Mondays and select 2026 dates; storms may close it. Lower station at bus 291 terminus (from Nyugati); upper via bus 21/221 to Normafa (20-30 min walk) or Children’s Railway (János-hegy/Virágvölgy stops).

Ticket prices and types (from Feb 1, 2026):

  • Full-price one-way: 3,000 HUF
  • Full-price two-way (any directions): 4,000 HUF
  • Child (3-14 years) one-way: 1,000 HUF
  • Child (3-14 years) two-way: 1,500 HUF
  • Student (15-25 years) one-way: 1,500 HUF
  • Student (15-25 years) two-way: 2,500 HUF
  • Under 3: Free
  • Budapest Card/Plus: Free both ways (buffet pickup)

Smart Tips for Both: Tickets, Rules, and Seamless Days

Special services require on-site/online (Funicular) tickets; standard BKK passes don’t apply. Tickets last one year; partial two-way use carries over. Refunds for closures need receipts. Kids under 10 (Chairlift)/6 (Funicular) need adults; no eating/drinking/smoking; pets in carriers (full fare, dogs muzzled on Funicular).

Pair them: Funicular for castle walks and Fisherman’s Bastion, then bus to Chairlift for hikes, lookouts, and Normafa treats. Works year-round—layer up in winter, enjoy breezes in summer.
