Budapest from Above After Dark: The 11th Night of the Chairlift

There are plenty of ways to see Budapest at night — from a river cruise, from the Buda Castle terraces, from the top of Gellért Hill. But there is exactly one way to glide silently through the summer darkness above the Buda Hills while the illuminated Parliament building shimmers in the distance, and that’s aboard the Zugliget Chairlift on the night of July 11, 2026. The 11th Night of the Chairlift is one of Budapest’s most quietly magical annual events, and it runs from 7:00 PM on Saturday, July 11 until 1:00 AM on Sunday, July 12.
A Piece of Budapest History, Open After Dark
The Zugliget Chairlift has been carrying passengers up through the forested Buda Hills since 1970, and it remains one of the city’s most charming and underrated attractions. The ride covers a 262-metre elevation difference across 12 minutes in open suspended chairs, gliding through the green canopy of the hills above the city. By day, the panorama is already remarkable. After sunset, it becomes something else entirely.
The chairlift connects the Zugliget valley station to the upper station near János Hill — the highest point in Budapest — and on a clear summer night the views extend across the entire city, with the lit dome of the Parliament building visible on the horizon even as midnight approaches. It’s a perspective on Budapest that very few visitors ever experience, and the Night of the Chairlift exists specifically to make it possible.
A little piece of trivia worth knowing: before the chairlift opened, organisers held a public competition to name the new transport. The shortlisted suggestions included gems like “Helicopter-Jani,” “Mountain Buzzer,” and “Tug-of-War” before the rather more dignified name Libegő — which loosely translates as “floater” or “glider” — was chosen. It was a close call.
The Event: What to Expect
The evening has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. At the valley station in Zugliget, live music plays throughout the event, creating a festive mood as visitors queue and mingle before boarding. The upper station café and buffet remains open for the entire duration of the night, so you can linger at the top, enjoy the view with a drink in hand, and take your time before heading back down.
Last departure from the valley station heading uphill is at 00:30, and the final return from the upper station is at 01:00, so there’s ample time to enjoy the evening at your own pace. Boarding operates on a first-come, first-served basis upon arrival, which is another reason to secure your ticket in advance and arrive with time to spare.
Tickets: Online Only This Year
This is the first year that the Night of the Chairlift has moved to an exclusively online ticketing system, and it’s a welcome change. In previous years, the event’s enormous popularity meant that many people made the journey out to Zugliget only to find they couldn’t get on — an avoidable disappointment. The new advance booking system through the BKV webshop means you can secure your spot before you leave home.
The ticket is a round-trip ticket priced at 5,000 Hungarian forints, covering one uphill and one downhill journey. It’s valid from 10:00 AM on the day of the event, meaning you can also use it for a daytime visit if you arrive early and want to experience both the day and night versions of the ride. After 7:00 PM, only the special Night of the Chairlift ticket is accepted — tickets purchased through the BudapestGO app or on-site machines are not valid for the event. Children under three ride free, but no other discounts apply. Tickets went on sale on June 26, and given the consistent sell-out history of this event, booking sooner rather than later is strongly advised.
Getting There
The Zugliget Chairlift is located in the 2nd district of Buda, in the hills above the city. It’s not the most central location, but getting there is part of the adventure. Bus 291 runs from Nyugati Railway Station directly to the chairlift, and for something more atmospheric, the retro R158 service operates between Széll Kálmán Square (a major transport hub reachable by metro line M2) and the Zugliget Chairlift stop, using classic Ikarus 280 articulated buses — a lovely piece of Hungarian transport nostalgia in their own right. Note that the retro buses only accept boarding at the terminal stops, and regular BKV fares apply. If you’re driving, limited parking is available at the site.
Why This Belongs on Your Budapest Itinerary
The Night of the Chairlift sits in a special category of Budapest experiences — unhurried, beautiful, and genuinely unlike anything else in the city. It’s not a concert or a festival or a market. It’s simply the city, seen from above, in the dark, from a slowly moving chair suspended between the treetops and the sky. For anyone who loves Budapest — or is just beginning to — it offers a perspective that stays with you long after the summer is over.
Night of the Chairlift 2026 takes place on Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 7:00 PM to 1:00 AM at the Zugliget Chairlift, 2nd District, Budapest. Tickets are available exclusively online via the BKV webshop. Book early — this one sells out every year.
