Múzeumok Majálisa – Budapest’s Biggest Museum Festival Returns in May 2026

Celebrate Culture at the 28th Museum Festival at the Hungarian National Museum

If you’re visiting Budapest on the weekend of May 16 and 17, 2026, you’re in for a real treat. The Múzeumok Majálisa — Hungary’s largest museum festival — is back for its 29th edition at the Hungarian National Museum, and it’s the kind of event that makes a city visit genuinely memorable. Best of all, entry to the National Museum building and its permanent exhibitions is completely free for the duration of the festival.

What Is Múzeumok Majálisa?

Múzeumok Majálisa translates roughly as the Museum May Day Festival, and it’s exactly what it sounds like — a joyful, open-air celebration of culture, history and community. For nearly three decades, the festival has gathered Hungary’s most fascinating museums, collections and cultural institutions in one place, turning the grounds of the Hungarian National Museum into a buzzing, colourful cultural fair. This year’s edition is held in the spirit of the International Museum Day motto chosen by ICOM (International Council of Museums): Museums Uniting a Divided World — a theme that puts connection, dialogue and shared humanity at the heart of the programme.

Almost 100 Museums Under One Roof — Well, One Garden

The heart of the festival is the Múzeumkert — the beautiful garden surrounding the National Museum — which comes alive with the tents and stands of close to 100 participating museums and institutions from across Hungary. Each brings its own interactive displays, demonstrations and hands-on activities, making it possible to travel the length and breadth of Hungarian cultural life in a single afternoon stroll. The garden is open from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM, giving you plenty of time to explore at your own pace, while the museum building itself is open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Guided Walks Through Budapest’s Hidden History

One of the highlights of this year’s festival is a series of themed guided walks that take visitors beyond the museum garden and out into the city streets. These walks are conducted in Hungarian, but offer a fascinating glimpse into Budapest’s layered past for those who speak the language. All walks depart from the information desk in the Museum Garden, and advance registration is required as places are limited.

The walk schedule is as follows:

Saturday, May 16:

  • 12:00 and 15:00 – Városi Vadon (Urban Wilderness) walk, organized by the Hungarian Natural History Museum — for all ages
  • 16:00 – The Museum Garden and the History of Medicine walk, organized by the Semmelweis Museum of Medical History — for all ages

Sunday, May 17:

  • 10:00 – Egy Rettentő Hatalom (A Terrible Power) urban walk, organized by the Petőfi Literary Museum — for adults
  • 12:00 and 15:00 – Városi Vadon walk, Hungarian Natural History Museum — for all ages
  • 16:00 – The Museum Garden and the History of Medicine walk — for all ages

Something for Every Visitor

The festival is designed to be welcoming to absolutely everyone, and the sheer variety of the programme reflects that. Across both days, you can expect interactive exhibitions and demonstrations, curator-led gallery tours, panel discussions and talks, family activities and creative workshops, and live music performances and concerts. While the talks and guided tours are held in Hungarian, the interactive exhibits, musical performances and hands-on activities are accessible and enjoyable for international visitors too — and the festive atmosphere of the garden needs no translation at all.

Free Entry to the National Museum

During the festival weekend, the entire Hungarian National Museum — one of Budapest’s most iconic cultural institutions, home to treasures spanning thousands of years of Hungarian history — is free to enter. If you haven’t yet had the chance to explore its permanent collections, this is the perfect opportunity to do so alongside the festival buzz.
