Uber Introduces Cash Payment Option in Budapest

Uber, the popular ride-hailing service, has announced that it will now allow users to pay for their rides with cash in Budapest. This move comes as a significant change for the company, which typically operates on a cashless basis.

Budapest joins a growing list of cities where Uber has introduced the cash payment option to accommodate local preferences and provide more flexibility to its users. The company recognizes that while many people prefer the convenience of digital payments, others still rely on cash for their transactions.

To use the cash payment option, users simply need to select it within the Uber app when requesting a ride. If a user realizes they don’t have enough cash on hand during the trip, they can still pay digitally through the app or use a bank card with the driver’s terminal.

Uber has also outlined a procedure for instances where drivers cannot provide exact change. In such cases, users are advised to contact Uber’s customer support to settle any remaining balance.

For new Uber users in Budapest, there is an initial cash spending limit of 14,000 Hungarian Forints (approximately $40). As users complete more trips, this limit can increase up to 20,000 Hungarian Forints (roughly $57).

The introduction of the cash payment option in Budapest demonstrates Uber’s willingness to adapt to the needs and preferences of the local market. The company returned to the Hungarian capital in the summer of 2023, partnering with a subsidiary of Főtaxi and adhering to the tariffs set by the Budapest Transport Center (BKK).

Uber’s return to Budapest, eight years after being driven out by the taxi lobby, is seen as a positive development for both users and drivers. The app’s ease of use and upfront pricing make it an attractive option for riders, while the influx of foreign tourists who often seek out Uber upon arriving in the city benefits local taxi drivers.

As Uber continues to expand its presence in Budapest, the addition of the cash payment option is expected to make the service even more accessible and convenient for its users.
