Advent in Óbuda 2026: A Charming Budapest Christmas Market with Free Ice Skating

Looking for a Budapest Christmas market with a neighbourhood feel? Head to Óbuda, where festive stalls, an ice rink and live music bring the historic Main Square to life. Running from November 27 to December 23, 2026, Advent in Óbuda spreads across Main Square and neighbouring Holy Spirit Square, offering a lovely reason to explore beyond the city centre.
With the Town Hall and Zichy Palace providing a Baroque backdrop, this Christmas fair has something of a small-town atmosphere within Budapest. Come for a warming drink and a browse around the craft stalls, or make an evening of it with skating, concerts and sparkling Christmas lights. Admission to the fair is free.
Christmas Gifts, Hungarian Treats and Warming Drinks
The market is an inviting place to slow down between sightseeing stops. Browse handmade Christmas decorations, gifts and edible treats, then follow the aromas drifting from the food stalls.
There is plenty to tempt you, from mulled wine, tea and hot chocolate to chimney cake, doughnuts, churros and roasted chestnuts. For something more substantial, the announced selection includes grilled dishes, pulled-meat sandwiches, raclette and marrow toast. You can also try lángos, Hungary’s much-loved fried flatbread, with gluten-free and vegan versions included in the advertised offering.
Whether you are shopping for a small souvenir or simply enjoying the lights with something warm in your hands, the setting is a big part of the appeal.

Free Ice Skating and Festive Ice Discos
The ice rink on Main Square is one of the fair’s main attractions, and access to the ice is free. Skate rental is separate, so bring your own skates if you have them.
The opening celebrations on Friday, November 27 begin with music at 4:30pm, followed by the official opening and Christmas lights switch-on at 5pm. Students from the Pavuk Figure Skating School then take to the ice for a demonstration, before Dániel Szebényi performs with guest Iván Vitáris at 6:30pm.
If you like your skating with a soundtrack, the Thursday themed ice discos start at 5pm. December 3 brings an ABBA Night, December 10 is all about skating in your favourite ugly Christmas sweater, and December 17 revisits hits associated with VIVA TV. Friday ice discos are also scheduled for December 4, 11 and 18 at 5pm.
Santa’s Gingerbread House and Family Activities
Travelling to Budapest with children? Santa and his elves will welcome young visitors inside the illuminated Gingerbread House on Main Square from November 27 until December 6. After Santa’s departure, the house becomes a space for children’s craft activities from December 7 to 20.
Weekend visits also bring the chance to meet Olaf and the Grinch, while a carousel, children’s concerts and puppet shows add to the family-friendly programme. Character appearances and Gingerbread House activities have their own schedules, so check the latest times before planning your visit around a particular attraction.
There are festive photo opportunities across both squares, too. Look out for the illuminated reindeer sleigh on Main Square and the glowing gift-box installation on Holy Spirit Square.
Free Concerts and Sunday Candle Lighting
Live music is a major part of Advent in Óbuda, with performances ranging from Hungarian folk and jazz to pop, choirs and musical theatre. Even if the artists’ names are new to you, the concerts offer an easy way to enjoy a little local culture during your Budapest stay.
Highlights include Csík Band on November 28, Zséda on November 29, Hot Jazz Band on December 12 and Caramel on December 19. Each of these evening concerts is scheduled for 6:30pm. On December 20, Kati Wolf performs at 4pm, followed later by Kaláka’s Christmas-themed concert at 6:30pm.
For a particularly seasonal visit, arrive on one of the four Advent Sundays: November 29, December 6, December 13 or December 20. Candle lighting takes place at 5:30pm, bringing a shared festive moment to the square between the afternoon and evening performances. Saturday evenings also feature fire-juggling shows by the Tűzlélek company at 5:30pm.
More Seasonal Events at Esernyős Cultural Centre
Alongside the outdoor celebrations, Esernyős Cultural Centre’s Sinbad Event Hall hosts a separate programme of workshops, performances and seasonal activities.
Families can look out for Christmas-decoration making on December 5 and gift-bag decorating on December 19. Other events include a concert by the Gábor Antal Trio on December 2, an Advent Night of Yoga on December 11 and a Christmas-themed creative evening for adults on December 18.
Some indoor activities require registration or a ticket. Spoken performances may also be in Hungarian, so check the individual event details if language is an important consideration.
How to Get to the Óbuda Christmas Market
The fair takes place in Budapest’s District III, around Óbuda’s Main Square and Holy Spirit Square. For navigation, their Hungarian map names are Fő tér and Szentlélek tér.
From Batthyány Square, which connects with metro line M2, take the H5 suburban railway to Szentlélek tér. Tram 1 also stops at Szentlélek tér, a short walk from the market.
