Budapest's Festive Light Vehicles Brighten Up the Winter Season

As the winter season approaches, Budapest is once again gearing up to welcome its beloved light vehicles, which have become an integral part of the city’s Christmas celebrations. For the past 15 years, these illuminated trams and buses have been spreading holiday cheer throughout the Hungarian capital, and this year is no exception. Let’s take a closer look at what’s in store for the 2024 winter season.

Update

The Budapest Transport Company posted a comprehensive summary of all the lines where special holiday vehicles will be running in Budapest this winter season. You can check the vehicles that got a Christmas glow-up and their timetables on BKK’s site.

A new addition to the holiday fleet was the BKK boat that circles the city several times during the day and embarks on a sightseeing tour on the Danube showcasing the iconic sites near the river. The light boats leave the port at Kossuth Lajos Square at 6 PM, 7:30 PM, 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM every day.

Round Trip Details

The cruise ship embarks from Kossuth Lajos Square and stops at the following ports: Margitsziget, Centenary monument – Batthyány Square – Várkert Bazaar – Petőfi Square – Kossuth Lajos Square port in one hour. You can get on and off the ship at any of the listed ports. The boat departs from Kossuth square at 11 AM, 12 AM, 1 PM, 3 PM, 4 PM, 5 PM, and 6 PM.

Bicycles and dogs (or other pets in pet carriers) can be transported on the roundabout. The flight can be used all day (11:00-19:00) by redeeming a day ticket – even with interruptions.

Sightseeing Tour Details

The sightseeing tour, which starts at 7:30 PM, 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM, departs from and returns to Kossuth Square. The ship covers the circular route and attractions, but does not stop at the intermediate ports, so it offers its passengers a more relaxed view and an undisturbed pastime in the early evening hours.

Tariff:

  • Child ticket (ages 3-18) – HUF 1,950

The Light Trams

On December 2nd, Monday, six festive trams will hit the streets of Budapest, along with the iconic light cogwheel railway. The UV tram will run on lines 2, the Tatra T5C5 on line 1, the Combino on lines 4 and 6, the KCSV7 on line 23, the Ganz articulated on line 49, and the TW6000 on line 50. These trams will operate according to an “operative timetable” (meaning they’ll run as circumstances allow) until 9:00 PM. The light cogwheel railway will also start its festive journey on the same day.

The Cogwheel Railway

The Budapest Cogwheel Railway, a unique feature of the city’s public transportation system, has been actively serving the residents of Buda for many years. In recent years, it has joined the light vehicle fleet during the Advent season, adding to the festive atmosphere. In 2024, the Cogwheel Railway will once again be decked out in lights, as announced by the BKK (Budapest Transport Company) on their Facebook page.

Expanded Fleet

Last year, the fleet of light vehicles significantly expanded, allowing passengers to encounter various types of illuminated trams on Budapest’s busiest lines throughout the Advent season. In 2024, the classic light tram on line 2 and other light vehicles will make appearances across the city, similar to previous years.

Light Buses

In addition to the light trams, light buses will also be introduced to Budapest’s streets this year. These festive vehicles will operate from December 2, 2024, until January 3, 2025, providing a spectacular sight during the Advent and Christmas period. The BKK (Centre for Budapest Transport) has published the timetable on their website, with the light vehicles marked by a snowflake icon.

Santa’s Trolleybuses

Among the many delightful attractions that grace the city during this time, the Santa’s Light Trolleybuses have become a beloved tradition, spreading joy and cheer to both locals and visitors alike.

These special trolleybuses, adorned with twinkling lights and festive decorations, traverse the public transportation lines of Budapest, bringing a touch of whimsy to the everyday commute. The interior of the trolleybuses is equally enchanting, with cozy seats and cheerful holiday decorations that create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

But the real star of the show is none other than Santa Claus himself! That’s right, the jolly old man in red makes a special appearance on these trolleybuses, much to the delight of children and adults alike. As the trolleybus winds its way through the city streets, passengers have the opportunity to meet Santa, share their Christmas wishes, and bask in the magic of the season.

The Santa’s Light Trolleybuses operate on various routes throughout Budapest, including the popular 72, 75, 76, and 80 lines. So, no matter where you find yourself in the city, you’re likely to catch a glimpse of these enchanting vehicles as they spread holiday cheer far and wide.

Riding the Santa’s Light Trolleybus is an experience like no other. As you step aboard, you’ll be greeted by the warm glow of the lights and the festive melodies of Christmas carols. The air is filled with the scent of cinnamon and spice, and the excitement of the season is palpable. Children’s eyes light up as they catch sight of Santa, and even the most hardened adults can’t help but crack a smile in the presence of such unbridled joy.

Getting into the Holiday Spirit

The BKV’s light fleet plays a significant role in creating a festive atmosphere throughout the city. As the air starts to fill with the anticipation of Christmas, these moving decorations help residents and visitors alike slow down and enjoy the enchanting sights. The light vehicles bring warmth and joy to the streets of Budapest, making the journey home from work or a leisurely stroll through the city even more magical.

Riding the Light Vehicles

Despite their festive appearance, the light trams and buses operate under the regular fare system, meaning passengers don’t have to pay extra to enjoy the Christmas-themed public transportation. Using the BKK Futár app, you can easily track the location of the light vehicles and plan your trip accordingly.

The “Csillamos” Tradition

The light trams, affectionately nicknamed “Csillamos” (a play on the words “csillog,” meaning sparkle, and “villamos,” meaning tram), have been running for over a decade. These 60-year-old BKV vehicles are beautifully decorated both inside and out. What started as a single line has now expanded to multiple routes, offering a truly festive experience for passengers.

A Festive Outing

Riding the light vehicles can be a wonderful way to unwind and take in the holiday spirit. Whether you’re a local looking to de-stress or a family seeking a fun outing, hopping on a glittering tram or bus is an experience not to be missed. Take a leisurely ride, soak in the dazzling lights, and marvel at the city’s decorations as if you were a tourist. Don’t forget to snap some photos of these stunning vehicles!

The “Beauty Contest”

Each year, the decorations on the light vehicles are eagerly anticipated. For several consecutive years, the Miskolc Advent Tram has been voted Europe’s most beautiful festive tram by the MHD86.cz transport magazine, beating out contenders from eight countries and 27 decorated vehicles. While this doesn’t diminish the charm of Budapest’s light vehicles, it’s a testament to their growing popularity among locals and tourists alike.

Conclusion

As the winter season approaches, Budapest once again prepares to welcome its beloved light vehicles. These illuminated trams and buses have become an integral part of the city’s Christmas celebrations, spreading joy and festive cheer throughout the Hungarian capital. Whether you’re a local resident or a visiting tourist, be sure to take some time to ride these glittering vehicles and immerse yourself in the magic of the holiday season. Who knows, you might even spot Santa himself hopping aboard!
