Budapest’s Citadella Set for a Green Transformation by 2026
The iconic Citadella fortress in Budapest is undergoing a major renovation that promises to transform it into a greener, more accessible urban oasis by 2026. This ambitious project, part of the National Hauszmann Program, aims to significantly expand the green spaces within and around the fortress while introducing new community areas and attractions.
A Greener Citadella
The renovation plans place a strong emphasis on increasing the green areas of the Citadella. The current green space will be expanded by 50%, reaching a total of 20,000 square meters. Within the fortress walls, a new 6,000 square meter public park will be created, offering visitors a serene natural environment in the heart of the city.
Diverse Flora and Sustainable Design
The landscaping efforts are already underway, with 59 ornamental trees and shrubs being planted in the inner courtyard. These include a variety of species such as almond, ornamental cherry, ornamental apple, Judas tree, and magnolia. The project also introduces some rare dendrological specimens like the Persian ironwood tree.
Many of the new trees are 20-year-old pre-grown specimens, weighing up to 300 kilograms each. Special cranes were used to carefully position these mature trees, ensuring their safe and precise planting. The green spaces will be further enhanced with flowery lawns, roses, lavender, climbing plants, and grapevines, creating a diverse and visually appealing landscape.
Sustainability at the Forefront
Sustainability is a key consideration in the Citadella’s green transformation. The irrigation system will utilize collected rainwater, while flat roofs will be converted into green roofs featuring drought-resistant plants. This eco-friendly approach not only conserves water but also helps maintain the vegetation during hot summer months.
New Community Spaces and Exhibitions
The renovation extends beyond just greenery. The inner park will feature new amenities such as a café, ice cream parlor, and gift shop, providing visitors with comfortable spaces to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
One of the most exciting additions is the new exhibition in the cannon tower. Titled “The Bastion of Freedom,” it will showcase the history of Hungarian freedom struggles, offering a poignant tribute to the nation’s past.
The Liberty Statue and Enhanced Views
The iconic Liberty Statue will also receive attention, with the surrounding terrace being redesigned to offer even more impressive views of the city. This renovation aims to enhance both the historical significance and the tourist appeal of the Citadella.
Looking Ahead to 2026
As the project nears completion in early 2026, the Citadella is set to become a modern, sustainable, and accessible public space that honors its historical roots while embracing the future. The expanded green areas, unique plant species, new community spaces, and historical exhibition will collectively transform the Citadella into one of Budapest’s most beloved locations.
This renovation project represents a harmonious blend of history and nature, inviting visitors to experience the beauty of Budapest from this iconic hilltop fortress. As the green transformation progresses, the Citadella is poised to offer a refreshing urban retreat, combining cultural heritage with natural beauty in the heart of Hungary’s capital.
