BudapestGO's New Safety Feature: Enhancing Security and Comfort for Passengers in Budapest

Budapest, a city celebrated for its stunning architecture, rich history, and efficient public transport system, has taken a significant step toward improving passenger safety. As of March 31, 2025, the BudapestGO app—a widely used tool for navigating the city’s public transportation network—has introduced a new feature that allows users to report incidents requiring law enforcement intervention directly through the app. This innovation is part of the broader efforts of the Budapest Passenger Security Service (BPSS) to create a safer and more welcoming environment for both residents and foreign tourists.

A New Era of Passenger Safety

The newly added feature in the BudapestGO app is designed to empower passengers with a quick and easy way to report safety concerns. Accessible through the app’s “Need Help?” menu, this function enables users to notify authorities about situations requiring intervention, such as public disturbances caused by intoxicated individuals, panhandling, or other violations of travel conditions. The process is intuitive and streamlined: with just three taps on their smartphone, passengers can alert the BPSS dispatch center.

The app provides two main options for reporting issues:

  • Emergency Situations: In cases where someone’s life or property is in immediate danger—such as aggression, vandalism, or medical emergencies—passengers can call Hungary’s emergency number (112) directly through the app by selecting the “Is it an emergency?” option.
  • Non-Emergency Issues: For less urgent but disruptive situations, such as intoxicated passengers or individuals violating travel rules, users can choose the “Are you experiencing a problem that requires law enforcement intervention?” option. This connects them to BPSS personnel who can dispatch assistance promptly.

This dual approach ensures that passengers can address both critical emergencies and minor disturbances efficiently while traveling on Budapest’s public transport network.

When and How to Use the Feature

The new feature is particularly useful for addressing a wide range of scenarios that may arise during travel. Passengers are encouraged to use it in the following circumstances:

  • Emergencies: If there’s an immediate threat to safety or property, such as witnessing aggression or experiencing a medical emergency.
  • Disruptive Behavior: For instances where passengers are intoxicated, panhandling disrupts the journey, or individuals are violating travel conditions (e.g., soiled clothing).
  • Vandalism or Property Damage: When damage to public transport vehicles or infrastructure occurs.
  • General Safety Concerns: Anytime passengers feel uncomfortable due to suspicious activity or other disturbances.

To access this feature, users simply open the BudapestGO app, tap “More” at the bottom of the screen, then select “Need Help?” From there, they can choose the appropriate option based on their situation.

A Unified Approach to Public Transport Security

The introduction of this feature aligns with Budapest’s broader strategy to enhance passenger safety through coordinated efforts. On January 1, 2025, the BPSS was established as an integrated system uniting various municipal organizations such as BKK (Budapest Transport Center), BKV (Budapest Transport Company), and city law enforcement teams. This unified management structure ensures seamless collaboration between these entities.

The BPSS employs over 50 personnel at any given time and plans to expand its team to 75 members. These professionals are easily identifiable by their high-visibility yellow vests and are stationed on key transport lines like trams 4 and 6 around the clock. Their presence not only deters potential incidents but also reassures passengers of their safety.

Leveraging Technology for Safety

Budapest’s commitment to passenger security extends beyond human resources. Approximately 70% of vehicles operating within the BKK network are equipped with surveillance cameras, with plans to increase this percentage as new vehicles are introduced. Additionally, since December 2024, ticket inspectors and security personnel have been equipped with body cameras to enhance accountability during interactions with passengers.

The BPSS also employs data-driven strategies to optimize resource allocation. By analyzing incident patterns across different lines and times of day, BKK has been able to focus its security efforts on areas with higher risks. This proactive approach has significantly improved passengers’ overall sense of safety.

Social Responsibility Beyond Law Enforcement

The BPSS goes beyond traditional security measures by addressing the needs of socially vulnerable individuals encountered during their operations. In collaboration with organizations like the Budapest Methodological Centre of Social Policy (BMSZKI) and NGOs such as the Menhely Foundation and the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta, BPSS ensures that those in need receive appropriate care and support.

This dual focus on security and social responsibility reflects Budapest’s holistic approach to public welfare. By combining safety measures with compassionate interventions, the city aims to create an inclusive environment where all individuals feel respected and protected.

What This Means for Tourists

For foreign tourists visiting Budapest, these developments offer peace of mind while exploring the city’s attractions via public transport. The enhanced safety measures ensure that visitors can navigate Budapest’s iconic trams, buses, and metro lines without worry. Whether traveling along Andrássy Avenue or crossing the Danube on tram line 2, tourists can trust that help is readily available should they need it.

Moreover, the user-friendly BudapestGO app serves as an indispensable tool for tourists. In addition to its new safety feature, it provides real-time updates on routes, schedules, ticketing options, and service changes—making it easier than ever to explore Budapest’s many wonders.

A Safer Future for All

Budapest’s innovative approach to passenger safety sets a benchmark for cities worldwide. By integrating technology with human-centered solutions like those offered by BudapestGO and BPSS, the city demonstrates how urban environments can prioritize both security and compassion.

For tourists planning their visit to this enchanting destination, these advancements ensure a secure and memorable experience. Whether admiring Buda Castle or enjoying a Danube cruise at sunset, travelers can rest assured that Budapest is committed to their safety every step of the way.
