Római Part Beach: The Only Free Beach in Budapest

Budapest Could Welcome Two New Free Beaches This Summer

Budapest’s Római Part Beach, the city’s only natural bathing spot along the Danube River, has officially opened its shores for the summer season. Visitors can enjoy the refreshing waters and scenic surroundings without any entrance fees, reviving the beloved tradition of Danube bathing that was widely accepted before 1973.

Water Quality and Safety

The beach underwent thorough assessments, strict water quality tests, and authorizations from relevant authorities before the opening. The water quality is monitored daily throughout the entire season. If at any point the water quality fails to meet the safe bathing standards, the beach will be closed immediately and reopened only when the measurements confirm suitable conditions.

Services and Amenities

Guests can take advantage of the colorful sun loungers, free drinking water, restrooms, changing facilities, and showers. Bicycle storage is also provided at no cost. Lifeguards will be on duty during the opening hours, and the Hungarian Red Cross Danube Riverside First Aid Service will be available to ensure visitors’ safety and well-being. Swimming is allowed only within the designated area marked by buoys, indicating a water depth of 120 cm.

Opening Hours

The Római Part Beach is open during the summer months, usually from June to August 20, daily from 10 am to 7 pm.

Tips for Visitors

  • Bring water shoes or sandals as the shore is rocky and can get very hot during the day.
  • Seek shade under the trees, especially during the afternoon when the sun is strong.
  • Take advantage of the free amenities and services provided.

Getting There

The beach is located at Kossuth Lajos üdülőpart 15-17 in District III.

By Public Transport: Take bus 34 and get off at the Szent János utca stop, then walk a few minutes to the beach.

By Bicycle: Secure bicycle storage is available at the Óbuda-Pénzügyőr SE area.

By Car: Parking is possible on the streets perpendicular to the bathing area, such as Őrtorony utca, Szent János utca, Losonc utca, and Kalászi utca, subject to availability.

Nearby Attractions

The Római Part itself is a beloved institution in Budapest, with a rich history and charming atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy the massive trees lining the path and the delightful scent of the Danube River. The area is also known for its boat houses, where many locals learned to swim in the past.

Conclusion

The reopening of the Római Part Beach is a testament to the efforts made since 2013 to revitalize this treasured spot in Budapest. With its excellent water quality, beautiful natural surroundings, and range of amenities, the beach offers a unique and refreshing escape for both locals and tourists during the hot summer months. By adhering to the safety guidelines and enjoying the beach responsibly, visitors can help preserve this remarkable gem along the Danube River for generations to come.
