Halloween at Budapest Zoo 2026: Animal Encounters, Fire Shows and After-Dark Adventures

Budapest Zoo is getting a spooky makeover on Friday, October 30, 2026. From 6 pm to 11 pm, its Halloween evening promises animal encounters, fire-juggling shows, glowing characters and a closer look at the stranger side of nature.
The zoo will welcome daytime visitors as usual before closing and reopening at 6 pm for this separate evening event. Once darkness falls, you can explore atmospheric paths, discover witches’ secrets and watch some of the zoo’s residents take centre stage. It’s a family-friendly Halloween outing that mixes playful scares with wildlife and science.

Animal Encounters After Dark
The evening’s animal programme starts at 6:30 pm, with tiger and giant otter feedings alongside an elephant presentation. With several activities happening at the same time, it’s worth choosing your favourites rather than trying to catch everything.
At 7 pm, you can watch a camel presentation, see divers in action at Shark School or head to the Palm House for a close encounter with a snake. Lion feeding follows at 7:30 pm, when there is also another elephant presentation.
Later arrivals still have plenty to look forward to. At 9 pm, the programme includes another snake encounter, an elephant presentation and a second opportunity to watch the divers at Shark School.
Fire Dancers, Glowing Giants and Halloween Performances
The Main Gate Square becomes one of the evening’s entertainment hubs. Mirror creatures greet visitors from 6 pm, followed by a Halloween Dance Challenge at 7:30 pm and luminous giants at 8 pm. Another dance session takes place at 9 pm.
Fire-juggling performances light up the square at 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm. There will also be fire shows in front of the Palm House at both times, while the area opposite Shark School hosts a fire performance at 8:30 pm and an LED juggling show at 9:30 pm.
Light projections add to the atmosphere around the Australian House, Great Lake, Great Rock and Palace building, giving familiar parts of the zoo a different character after dark.
Discover the Darker Side of Nature
Under the theme “Bloodlines: Nature’s Dark Secrets,” the zoo’s educational programme explores questions that fit Halloween surprisingly well. Why do some animals drink blood? What makes certain plants blood-red? And what can a single blood sample tell a vet?

Talks cover blood-feeding animals, predators’ diets, mosquitoes, unusual animal relationships and the role of blood tests in veterinary care. Botanical activities introduce medicinal plants, dye-producing species and the ingredients behind some suitably witchy concoctions.
These presentations are in Hungarian, so non-Hungarian speakers may prefer to spend more time at the demonstrations, displays and performances.
Pumpkin Carving, Witches and Hands-On Fun
Between 6 pm and 10 pm, activities across the zoo give families plenty to explore between scheduled shows. The Palm House terrace hosts crafts and pumpkin carving, while the Great Lake is the place to seek out fortune-telling witches.
Near the seal pool, you’ll find close-up magic, puzzles and brainteasers. Other attractions include face painting, living statues, digital caricatures, a courage challenge and 360-degree selfies.
The programme also includes planetarium screenings and opportunities to ask an astronomer questions at Magic Mountain. For a different kind of adventure, virtual reality experiences feature a T. rex encounter at the Biodome’s Urban Oasis and a wildlife exploration experience on the Palm House terrace.
Tickets for Budapest Zoo’s Halloween Evening
Tickets are available through the zoo’s online ticketing platform and at its on-site ticket offices and ticket machines during opening hours. Remember that this is a separately ticketed evening: a daytime zoo ticket or regular zoo pass will not grant admission.
Capacity is limited to 7,000 visitors at any one time. Arranging your ticket ahead of your visit is a sensible option, and you’ll need to arrive before admission closes at 9 pm.
What to Know Before You Go
Although the event runs until 11 pm, most ongoing activities and the listed animal houses are scheduled to remain open only until 10 pm. These include the Palm House, Australian House, Elephant House, Magic Mountain, Shark School and the Biodome’s Urban Oasis, among other areas.
Some sections of the zoo will be closed for safety and animal welfare reasons. Lighting also varies: certain paths will use atmospheric and directional lights rather than full outdoor illumination.
Sound and lighting effects are part of the programme, which is worth considering if anyone in your group is sensitive to them. With several performances taking place simultaneously and possible programme changes, a little flexibility will help you enjoy this unusual Halloween night at Budapest Zoo.
