Budapest McDonald’s Toilet Fees: Why Your Receipt May Not Get You In

Stopping at McDonald’s for a meal and a quick bathroom break? At some Hungarian branches, buying food no longer guarantees free access to the toilets. The McDonald’s at Western Railway Station Square in Budapest uses an entry-gate system that charges 200 forints unless you access it through the chain’s MyMeki loyalty programme.

The important detail for visitors is that a purchase receipt does not unlock the gate. Instead, free entry depends on having the McDonald’s app, joining MyMeki and scanning your personal QR code. According to information McDonald’s supplied to Hungarian business newspaper Világgazdaság in October 2026, the system is operating at nine busy restaurants across Hungary, with installation underway at another.

How the Toilet Entry System Works

At the Western Railway Station Square restaurant, visitors encounter an access gate at the toilet entrance. There are two ways through: scan the individual QR code available to registered MyMeki members in the McDonald’s app, or pay the 200-forint entry fee.

Downloading the app alone is not enough. You must also join the MyMeki loyalty programme to use the free-access option. Once registered, you do not need to make a purchase or redeem loyalty points to enter.

That creates a distinction worth knowing before you order. A registered MyMeki member can use the toilets free of charge without buying anything that day, while someone who has just paid for a meal must still pay for toilet access if they do not use the loyalty programme.

Why a McDonald’s Receipt Is Not Enough

If you are accustomed to restaurant toilets opening with a code printed on your receipt, this arrangement may come as a surprise. At the affected branches, access is not linked to the amount you spend—or whether you have bought anything during that visit.

McDonald’s told Világgazdaság that restaurants operated by Progress Restaurant Network and equipped with these entry gates follow a uniform set of rules. Paying customers therefore have the same two options as everyone else: free entry through MyMeki or paid entry for 200 forints.

In practical terms, ordering a coffee or a burger solely to obtain free toilet access will not achieve that under this system. Your receipt proves your purchase, but it does not replace the app’s membership QR code.

What Happens to the 200-Forint Fee?

If you pay to enter, the system issues a coupon worth 200 forints. You can use it towards a subsequent purchase, but there are conditions that are especially relevant if you are only in Budapest for a short stay.

The coupon is valid for 14 days from the date it is issued and can only be redeemed at the same restaurant. It also requires a purchase worth at least 400 forints.

This means the entry fee is not automatically refunded, and the coupon is not a voucher you can spend at any McDonald’s in the city. It can offset 200 forints of an eligible later purchase at the issuing branch. If you do not return, or do not make a qualifying purchase within the validity period, the toilet visit remains a 200-forint expense.

Why McDonald’s Introduced the Gates

The current system at Western Railway Station Square was introduced in April 2026. McDonald’s explained that the restaurant’s high visitor numbers were the main reason for the change.

According to the company, the aim is to maintain the toilets’ cleanliness, keep them in suitable condition and ensure they continue operating smoothly over the long term. The same approach has since been adopted at several other high-traffic restaurants.

The distinction matters, however: this is not a confirmed nationwide rule for every Hungarian McDonald’s. The information provided in October 2026 refers to nine restaurants with similar systems and one further installation underway.

What Budapest Visitors Should Know Before Stopping In

For tourists, the simplest takeaway is not to assume that buying food includes free toilet access at a gate-equipped McDonald’s. At the Western Railway Station Square branch, it is MyMeki membership—not your receipt—that determines whether you can enter without paying.

If you intend to use the free-entry route, you need the relevant app registration and your personal membership QR code ready to scan. Otherwise, expect the 200-forint charge and keep the resulting coupon if you plan to make an eligible purchase at that same restaurant within the next 14 days.

McDonald’s says detailed information about the conditions is displayed near the toilet entrances at affected branches. Check those notices before trying the gate, particularly when visiting another location: the reported rollout does not mean every restaurant in Budapest uses the same entry arrangement.
