Palatinus Bath: Budapest’s Iconic Open-Air Bath Is Waking Up for Summer

Palatinus Beach Gets Its First Memorial Plaque

If you’re visiting Budapest this late May or early June, there’s one place you absolutely shouldn’t miss — and it’s not another thermal bath tucked inside a grand 19th-century building. Palatinus Bath, sprawling across the green heart of Margaret Island, is Budapest’s beloved open-air water park, and right now it’s gearing up for one of its best seasons yet.

The Pools Are Opening — One by One

The good news started rolling in with the warm weather. Thanks to an early burst of summer sunshine, Palatinus opened its outdoor children’s pool and adventure pool on May 23rd, joining the already-operating Margaréta pool, sitting pool, swimming pool, and training pool. That means right now you can splash around in six outdoor pools, each kept at a carefully maintained temperature — the warm, therapeutic Margaréta pool sits at a cozy 36°C, while the adventure pool and children’s pool hover around 30°C, and the Olympic-style swimming pool offers a refreshing 26°C for serious lap swimmers.

The next big milestone comes on May 30th, when the beach pool and the first and second thermal pools join the lineup. Then, mark your calendar for June 13th — that’s when the wave pool and the slide pool open, completing the full Palatinus experience. With 11 outdoor and 4 indoor pools in total, this is genuinely one of the most impressive aquatic complexes in Central Europe.

A Special Reason to Visit This Wednesday

On May 27th, Palatinus is joining the global Challenge Day movement — a community fitness initiative that started in Canada back in 1982 and has since spread around the world. The idea is beautifully simple: get moving for at least 15 consecutive minutes to get your heart rate up, and you’ve met the challenge. Anyone can participate, regardless of age or fitness level.

Between 9:00 and 18:30, the strand will be buzzing with free activities included with your entry ticket — from ping pong and badminton to swimming, cycling, and Nordic walking. There are also guided aqua fitness sessions running throughout the morning, water aerobics set to music in the afternoon, and water-based therapeutic gymnastics in the early evening. You just need to register at the info point before you start, and those who complete the challenge will receive a small surprise gift. It’s the perfect way to combine a leisurely day out with a little healthy movement.

Visit Before June 13th — Prices Are Still Low

Here’s the insider tip that savvy visitors should know: Palatinus operates on seasonal pricing, and the off-season rates are still in effect until June 12th. Starting June 13th, adult weekday tickets jump from 3,600 to 6,000 forints, and weekend tickets rise from 3,900 to 6,500 forints. Tickets for children, students, and seniors will increase from 2,400 to 4,500 forints on weekdays, and from 2,600 to 5,000 forints on weekends. There’s also an affordable late-afternoon entry (2 hours before closing) currently priced at 2,400 forints, which will go up to 4,400 forints after the season officially begins.

In other words, the window between now and June 12th offers arguably the best value of the entire year — a nearly full pool lineup at off-season prices. The higher season rates are expected to stay in place until early September.

Why Palatinus Stands Out in Budapest

Budapest is world-famous for its thermal bath culture, and the city’s spa operator — Budapest Gyógyfürdői és Hévizei Zrt. — manages a remarkable portfolio of facilities. Among them, Palatinus ranked seventh in visitor numbers last year, welcoming around 296,000 guests. That might sound modest compared to the iconic Széchenyi or Gellért baths, but consider this: the vast majority of those visitors come during the relatively short summer season. When the sun is out and the pools are all open, Palatinus transforms into one of the most vibrant and lively spots in the entire city.

Whether you’re traveling with kids who want to race down the slides, looking for a relaxing float in warm thermal water, or simply want to spend a long afternoon soaking up the sun on Margaret Island, Palatinus delivers an experience that’s hard to replicate anywhere else in Europe.
