Retro Buses Take Visitors to the Zugliget Chairlift in Budapest

Budapest, the capital city of Hungary, is known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and unique attractions. One such attraction is the Zugliget Chairlift, a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. To make the journey to the chairlift even more memorable, the city has introduced retro buses that will take visitors from Széll Kálmán Square to the valley station of the Zugliget Chairlift.

The R158 bus route, which commenced operation on July 13th during the Night of the Chairlifts event, will continue to run every Sunday until mid-September. These special buses are not just a means of transportation but also a nostalgic experience for passengers. The buses, including the Ikarus 260, 263, 412, and 415 models, have been restored to their original appearance, just as they looked when they first hit the streets of Budapest.

The retro buses will operate as express services, stopping only at the two terminals – Széll Kálmán Square and the Zugliget Chairlift valley station. Passengers can board the bus at the stop for routes 39 and 91 at Széll Kálmán Square, while in Zugliget, they can hop on at the terminal for bus 291.

Using the R158 retro bus service is easy and convenient, as it follows the normal fare system. Passengers can use their regular tickets or passes, and no additional fare is required. The service will run every Sunday from July 14th to September 15th.

For those interested in experiencing this unique journey, the timetable for the R158 retro bus is available on the BKK (Budapest Transport Center) website and the BudapestGO mobile application.

The introduction of these retro buses not only adds a touch of nostalgia to the journey but also enhances the overall experience of visiting the Zugliget Chairlift. It is a testament to Budapest’s efforts to preserve its history while providing modern conveniences to its visitors. So, the next time you find yourself in Budapest, make sure to take a ride on one of these charming retro buses and create unforgettable memories.
