Budapest Launches Integrated Passenger Safety Service
In a significant move to enhance public transportation safety and comfort, Budapest has introduced the Budapest Passenger Safety Service, an integrated system that brings together various city agencies to create a more secure travel experience for commuters.
A Unified Approach to Passenger Safety
The new service combines the existing security units of BKK (Centre for Budapest Transport) and BKV (Budapest Transport Company) with the newly formed BKK law enforcement division and the municipal law enforcement agency. This collaborative effort aims to provide a more coordinated and efficient response to safety concerns on public transportation.
Enhanced Visibility and Quick Response
A key feature of the new system is the 24-hour dispatch center, which enables faster reaction times to incidents. Passengers will notice an increased security presence on high-traffic routes, such as the 4-6 tram line. The security personnel will be easily identifiable, wearing uniform high-visibility yellow vests across all participating agencies.
Technology-Driven Safety Measures
The BKK continues to prioritize passenger safety through technological advancements:
- Approximately 70% of vehicles are now equipped with cameras
- 50 body cameras were distributed to ticket inspectors, passenger coordinators, and BKK Security Service staff in December 2024
- New vehicle acquisitions must include onboard cameras
Passenger Empowerment through Mobile App
Starting March 2025, the BudapestGO app will feature a new function allowing passengers to directly report incidents requiring law enforcement intervention, such as begging or intoxicated individuals. For immediate threats to personal safety or property, passengers are still advised to call 112.
Beyond Enforcement: A Compassionate Approach
The Budapest Passenger Safety Service is not solely focused on enforcement. It also aims to assist individuals in difficult social situations who may violate travel conditions. The service collaborates with municipal and civil organizations specializing in homeless care to ensure these individuals receive appropriate support and care.
This comprehensive approach to passenger safety demonstrates Budapest’s commitment to creating a more secure, comfortable, and compassionate public transportation system for all its residents and visitors.
