The Chess Olympiad, one of the world’s top 5 sporting events, will be celebrating its 45th edition in the Hungarian capital, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of FIDE (International Chess Federation). How cool is that? 😎
So mark your calendars for September 10-23, 2024, and get ready to cheer on the Hungarian players as they battle it out against the best in the world.
Did you know that chess has been a part of Hungary’s history for centuries? The game started spreading across the country way back in the 14th century and has been popular ever since. Even famous Hungarians like King Matthias’ wife, Beatrix, Francis II Rákóczi, István Széchenyi, Lajos Kossuth, Frigyes Karinthy, Sándor PetÅ‘fi, and Ferenc Erkel were known to play chess.
It’s no surprise that Hungary was one of the founding members of FIDE, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The country’s active participation in the sport has produced some world-famous chess players, including Lajos Portisch, Péter Lékó, Zoltán Almási, Ildikó Mádl, Richárd Rapport, and the Polgár sisters: Zsuzsanna, Zsófia, and Judit.
In this year’s Chess Olympiad, two of these legendary players will be representing Hungary: Péter Lékó and Richárd Rapport. Talk about a dream team!
The 45th Chess Olympiad welcomes all chess lovers and those who want to witness a historic competition. Held at the BOK Hall from September 10-23, the event will feature plenty of accompanying programs that will bring you closer to the most refined game of the mind.
The event is organized by the National Event Organizing Agency in collaboration with the Hungarian Chess Federation, so you know it’s going to be top-notch. 👌
