School’s Out — But First, a Splash: Budapest’s Iconic Spas Welcome Students for an Unforgettable End-of-Year Experience

School on the Beach

If there’s one way to close out a school year in style, it’s by swapping the classroom for a poolside, and that’s exactly what Budapest is offering this June. Five of the city’s beloved thermal baths and outdoor lidos are taking part in the national “School on the Beach” (Suli a strandon) campaign, running from June 8 to 19, 2026 — and the result is a week and a half of splashing, learning, and memories that students won’t soon forget.

What Is the School on the Beach Program?

Launched a few years ago by the Hungarian Bathing Association (Magyar Fürdőszövetség), the School on the Beach campaign was born from a simple but brilliant idea: what if the last weeks of the school year felt less like a countdown and more like an adventure? Instead of sitting at desks, students get to explore Hungary’s rich bathing culture, take part in movement-based wellness programs, and discover the fascinating world of medicinal thermal waters — all while having a fantastic time outdoors.

The motto says it all: “Education can happen in other ways too — through movement, discovery, and laughter.” This year, 50 groups joined last year’s 59, showing just how popular the initiative has become among teachers and students alike.

Budapest’s Five Participating Spas

Budapest Gyógyfürdői és Hévizei Zrt. (BGYH), the company that manages Budapest’s famous network of public thermal baths, is once again proudly on board. This year, five stunning venues are opening their doors to school groups with a generous 50% discount on student admission prices.

The Csillaghegyi Árpád Forrásfürdő is a charming spring-fed bath in the peaceful, leafy Óbuda district — a favorite among locals looking to escape the city buzz. Not far away, the Római Strandfürdő offers a classic Hungarian lido experience right on the banks of the Danube, with its participation running from June 15 to 19. Then there’s the iconic Palatinus on Margaret Island, one of Budapest’s most beloved outdoor complexes, complete with wave pools and thermal pools set against a gorgeous island backdrop. On the Pest side, the Paskál Gyógy- és Strandfürdő and the Pesterzsébeti Jódos-Sós Gyógy- és Strandfürdő round out the lineup, the latter being particularly unique for its iodine-salt thermal water, which has well-documented health benefits.

Why Budapest’s Thermal Bath Culture Is Worth Knowing About

For tourists visiting Budapest, this program offers a wonderful window into something that makes the city truly unique. Budapest sits atop one of the world’s richest networks of thermal springs, with over 100 natural hot springs beneath the city. This geological gift has shaped Budapest’s identity for centuries — from Roman times, when the settlement of Aquincum was already dotted with bathhouses, right through to the grand Neo-Baroque and Art Nouveau spa palaces built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Today, “going to the baths” isn’t just a tourist activity in Budapest — it’s a way of life. The thermal bath culture here is listed as part of Hungary’s national cultural heritage, and programs like School on the Beach are a testament to how seriously the city takes passing that tradition on to the next generation.

Planning a Visit? Here’s What to Know

If you’re traveling to Budapest this June, the city’s thermal baths are absolutely worth a visit — and seeing them buzzing with the energy of school groups only adds to the lively atmosphere. The participating venues are spread across different parts of the city, making it easy to combine a spa visit with broader sightseeing. Margaret Island’s Palatinus, for example, is a perfect half-day destination, while the Római Strand pairs beautifully with a leisurely afternoon along the Danube.

School groups wishing to register for the program can do so by reaching out via email at kiss.dora@budapestspas.hu or by visiting the official BGYH website at budapestgyogyfurdoi.hu. Applications are accepted until mid-June.

Whether you’re a student on a school trip or a curious traveler soaking in everything Budapest has to offer, the city’s thermal baths are a must — and in June, they’re more alive than ever.
