Experience Hungary’s Rich Craft Heritage at Celebration of Crafts 2024
If you’re visiting Budapest in August 2024, don’t miss the 38th annual Mesterségek Ünnepe (Festival of Folk Arts). This vibrant festival, held from August 17-20, showcases the incredible artistry and traditions of Hungarian folk crafts.
Set in the picturesque Buda Castle District, over 800 master craftspeople will open their workshop doors, allowing you to witness fascinating crafts like leatherworking, pottery, blacksmithing, weaving, embroidery, and egg decorating up close. It’s a rare opportunity to meet the skilled artisans keeping these centuries-old traditions alive.
A highlight is the ceremonial harvest wreath parade on August 20th, commemorating St. Stephen’s Day. Craftspeople in traditional dress will march from Hadik András Square to Szentháromság Square, followed by a bread blessing ceremony at 3pm.
This year’s guest of honor is the Czech Republic, with artisans from the National Institute of Folk Culture demonstrating weaving, blue dyeing, embroidery and wool crafts. The “folkTrend!” fashion show is also not to be missed, featuring modern clothing lines inspired by Hungarian folk designs.
With craft demonstrations, folk music and dance performances, this festival immerses you in the living heritage of Hungarian culture. Whether you’re browsing the stalls for unique handmade souvenirs or simply soaking up the lively atmosphere, Mesterségek Ünnepe offers an authentic glimpse into the nation’s artistic soul.
