Revitalizing Budapest’s Jewel: The Citadel renovation project

The Citadel, a renowned landmark crowning Gellért Hill in Hungary’s capital, Budapest, is undergoing a significant renovation initiative scheduled to commence in 2020. Spearheaded by the government and overseen by Gergely Fodor, this ambitious project aims to restore the fortress to its former grandeur while simultaneously improving accessibility and visitor amenities, as reported by Demokrata.

Citadella is part of World Heritage

Despite being designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, the Citadel has sadly suffered from decades of neglect, leading to its closure to visitors in 2014 due to safety concerns. Various uses over time, ranging from a meeting point for illicit activities to functioning as a nightclub, have contributed to the gradual deterioration of this historic site.

Presently, meticulous plans have been formulated to breathe new life into the fortress, with a primary focus on preserving its rich historical heritage while introducing modern facilities to enhance the visitor experience. Prior to commencing the renovation works, extensive archaeological research was conducted, unearthing a treasure trove of relics including Celtic, Roman, and Turkish coins, as well as remnants of an astronomical observatory dating back to 1815.

The renovation endeavor commenced with the partial demolition of a concrete bunker within the courtyard. Marking the beginning of a series of ongoing conservation efforts aimed at fortifying the fortress walls. Despite encountering challenges along the way, such as structural issues within the walls and variability in the underlying rock formations, the project remains steadfast in its commitment to revitalize this iconic landmark.
