Heat Warning in Budapest: Stay Safe and Enjoy the City’s Attractions

Heatwave Alert in Budapest: What Tourists Need to Know

As the summer heat intensifies in Budapest, it’s essential for tourists to take necessary precautions to stay safe and comfortable during their visit. The Hungarian Meteorological Service (OMSZ) has issued a red alert, the highest level of heat warning, for several counties in Hungary, including the capital city. Temperatures are expected to soar above 34-36°C (93-97°F) in the coming days, with daily average temperatures exceeding 29°C (84°F) in some regions.

While the heat can be challenging, it shouldn’t deter you from exploring the beautiful city of Budapest. One of the most popular attractions during the summer months is the “Budapest Eye,” a giant Ferris wheel located in Erzsébet Square. The best time to visit this installation is around sundown when the sun’s rays are getting weaker, and the wheel’s lights come to life, creating a mesmerizing atmosphere.

As the day progresses, the heat can become more intense, so it’s crucial to stay hydrated and take breaks in shaded areas. The Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) and the Volánbusz company are distributing mineral water at major railway stations and bus terminals throughout the country to help passengers cope with the heat. In Budapest, you can find water distribution points at the Nyugati, Keleti, and Déli railway stations between 10 am and 5 pm during the heatwave.

When planning your daily activities, consider visiting indoor attractions during the hottest hours of the day, such as museums, galleries, or shopping centers with air conditioning. The Hungarian National Gallery, located in the Buda Castle, offers a cool respite from the heat while showcasing an impressive collection of Hungarian art.

As the sun begins to set, the city comes alive with a different energy. Take a leisurely stroll along the Danube River, enjoying the cooler evening breeze and the stunning views of the illuminated bridges and landmarks. The famous Széchenyi Chain Bridge, connecting Buda and Pest, is particularly beautiful at night, with its iconic lion statues guarding the entrance.

Remember to protect yourself from the sun by wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and applying sunscreen with a high SPF. Stay hydrated by carrying a refillable water bottle and taking advantage of the city’s numerous drinking fountains and water distribution points.

Despite the heat, Budapest remains a captivating destination with plenty to offer. By taking the necessary precautions and planning your activities wisely, you can still enjoy the city’s charm and create unforgettable memories during your visit.
