Heatwave Alert in Budapest: What Tourists Need to Know

Budapest, the stunning capital of Hungary, is currently experiencing an intense heatwave, prompting the Chief Medical Officer to issue the highest level of heat alert from Wednesday, June 19th, until midnight on Saturday, June 22nd. As a foreign tourist visiting the city during this period, it is crucial to take necessary precautions to stay safe and comfortable.

The National Public Health and Pharmaceutical Center has advised the public, especially young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with cardiovascular diseases, to be extra cautious during the heatwave. Tourists are encouraged to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and to avoid direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day, typically from noon onwards. Applying sunscreen and wearing protective gear like hats or caps is highly recommended.

Travelers exploring the city by car should be vigilant and never leave children or pets unattended in parked vehicles. If you spot a child or animal left alone in a car, immediately call the emergency number 112 for assistance.

For those seeking respite from the scorching heat, Budapest’s thermal baths and beaches offer a refreshing escape. However, it is essential to cool down before jumping into the water to avoid shock. Three popular Budapest beaches, Palatinus, Római, and Pünkösdfürdői, have extended their opening hours until 8 pm from June 19th to 22nd, allowing visitors to enjoy a relaxing dip even during the evenings.

Tourists planning outdoor activities should exercise caution and adhere to fire safety regulations. In forested areas, light fires only in designated fire pits and refrain from doing so if there is a fire ban in place. Be mindful while grilling or cooking outdoors, and never leave the fire unattended.

As temperatures soar to 37-39°C (98.6-102.2°F), particularly in the southern and southeastern regions of Hungary, it is advisable to stay in shaded or air-conditioned areas and avoid strenuous physical activities during the hottest parts of the day.

By following these guidelines and taking necessary precautions, tourists can safely enjoy their visit to Budapest while navigating the challenges posed by the heatwave. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and make the most of your Hungarian adventure!
