Tulip and Sage – Gardens, Eras, Folk Art Exhibition at the Hungarian Heritage House

The Connection Between Nature and Hungarian Folk Art
From February 5 to November 29, 2026, the Hungarian Heritage House invites visitors to discover the deep relationship between nature and Hungarian folk art through the fascinating new exhibition Tulip and Sage – Gardens, Eras, Folk Art. Hosted in the Kallós Zoltán Exhibition Hall, this unique presentation spans five centuries of tradition, revealing how the beauty of gardens and the human bond with nature shaped Hungary’s decorative culture.
Curated by Dr. Szilvia Czingel with co-curators Krisztina Üveges and Emőke Nánássy, the exhibition offers a sensory journey through the floral motifs that once graced village homes, garments, carved furniture, and ceramics. More than 120 original artifacts — embroidered textiles, painted furnishings, folk costumes, and ceramics — illustrate how natural forms inspired generations of Hungarian artisans.
A Museum Experience for the Senses
Tulip and Sage goes beyond visual beauty. It is an invitation to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with the natural world. The exhibition embraces the idea of the “healing museum”, emphasizing how harmony, rhythm, and repetition in traditional design can calm both body and mind. Visitors are encouraged to experience the wellbeing that art and beauty can bring.
The exhibition also draws inspiration from Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s philosophy of returning to nature, reflecting on how gardens served not only as sources of inspiration but also as sanctuaries of serenity and renewal. The floral patterns displayed here are more than ornamental — they tell stories about belief, community, and the rhythm of life that once pulsed through the Hungarian countryside.
