Celebrate 175 Years of the Iconic Széchenyi Chain Bridge in Budapest
If you’re visiting Budapest in late May, don’t miss the chance to experience one of the city’s most famous landmarks in a truly unique way. On May 26th, 2024, the historic Széchenyi Chain Bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic and transformed into a lively outdoor festival celebrating 175 years since the bridge first opened to pedestrians in 1849.
The Lánchíd Piknik (Chain Bridge Picnic) is a free annual event that allows visitors to wander along the full length of the bridge while enjoying live music, children’s activities, historical exhibits and more against the stunning backdrop of the Danube River. From 10am to 8pm, the iconic suspension bridge connecting Buda and Pest will become a pedestrian-only party.
For families, the interactive children’s stage on the Pest side promises non-stop fun with live music, games, and a mesmerizing giant bubble show that’s sure to delight kids of all ages. Stroll along the bridge and you’ll encounter talented street musicians performing an eclectic mix of traditional Hungarian folk tunes and contemporary hits. Transport yourself back in time at the historical fashion shows, which recreate the styles worn by fashionable Budapestians when the Chain Bridge first opened in 1849. Marvel at the ornate dresses, tailored suits, and accessories that were all the rage nearly 175 years ago.
In addition to the scheduled programming, visitors can simply soak in views of the river, Buda Castle, and the ornate stone lion sculptures that have guarded the bridge since its opening nearly two centuries ago.
