Planning for Spring: Designing Annual Flower Beds
While winter is still in full swing, the FŐKERT team is already planning for spring by designing the annual flower beds for the upcoming year. This year, our designers have centered their creations around an important theme. In 2025, we will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and as a tribute, the patterns of the flower beds are inspired by prominent Hungarian figures associated with the Academy. From Szent-Györgyi Albert, the discoverer of Vitamin C, to Széchenyi István, the founder of the MTA, and Nobel laureate Karikó Katalin, who contributed to the development of mRNA-based vaccines.
Design Process
Each flower bed has two to three pattern designs created by our team of designers. A professional jury selects from these designs to determine how Budapest’s floral highlights will be refreshed in the coming year. The process is not only creative but also practical. After the voting process, a few days of workshop work ensue where decisions are made on which species will color each section of the flower beds. This collaborative effort involves designers, unit managers involved in maintenance sharing on-site experiences from previous years, our nursery’s director providing insights into pre-cultivating plant species, and a plant protection expert warning against selecting species prone to diseases.
Results and Impact
Thanks to this collective effort, next year will once again see vibrant and healthy flower beds adorning green spaces throughout Budapest. These floral displays pay homage to Hungary’s scientific achievements through a multitude of colorful symbols. The meticulous planning and collaboration ensure that residents and visitors alike can enjoy beautiful and thriving flower beds throughout the city.
Conclusion
As we embrace the winter season, it’s heartening to know that preparations are underway for a colorful spring ahead. The FŐKERT team’s dedication to creating stunning annual flower beds not only adds beauty to urban landscapes but also celebrates Hungary’s rich scientific heritage. By weaving together creativity, expertise, and teamwork, we look forward to seeing these vibrant displays bloom in full splendor in the upcoming year.
