Last Chance This Year to See Margaret Island’s Musical Fountain
If the Musical Fountain is on your Budapest itinerary, don’t leave it until October. Wednesday, 30 September 2026, is the last day this year to see its music, water and light show. The fountain will close on 1 October for several weeks of renovation, followed by winter preparations. It is expected to return in early May 2027.
Near the southern end of Margaret Island, the fountain is an easy stop during a walk through one of Budapest’s favourite green spaces. Water jets rise and move to the music, while the lights make an evening visit especially atmospheric. If you are in the city on 30 September, this is your final chance to catch the show before its extended break.
What’s Happening to the Fountain?
The renovation goes well beyond a change of playlist. Beneath the surface, crews will upgrade the water-treatment equipment and parts of the system that help create the fountain’s water patterns. Above ground, they will repair more than 200 square metres of the basin and renew the moving nozzles and LED lights. Speakers and key multimedia equipment will also be replaced.

New songs are being prepared for the fountain’s return. After the work, there will be a short test period before the fountain is prepared for winter at the end of October. The planned reopening is in early May 2027, although the exact date has not yet been confirmed.
Make a Day of Margaret Island
The fountain may be the reason for your visit, but there is plenty to enjoy before or after the show. Enter from Margaret Bridge, watch the performance near the island’s southern end, then follow the paths north through the greenery. Along the way, you can seek out the medieval convent ruins and the Water Tower; farther north, the Japanese Garden offers a quieter place to wander.
When you are ready for a break, head to the Margaret Island Gastro Promenade. Its casual places to eat and drink make it a convenient stop for a snack or a leisurely meal before returning to the fountain—or continuing your walk.
Margaret Island will still be worth visiting after 1 October, even without its most famous show. But if you want to see the Musical Fountain dance to music this year, make your visit by 30 September.
