Embrace Spring at the Skanzen Open-Air Museum near Budapest!

Escape the city bustle and immerse yourself in Hungarian heritage and nature this March! The Skanzen, Hungary’s largest open-air museum located near Szentendre, is opening its gates early with “walking tickets” for a sneak peek before the official season begins in April.

What’s the Skanzen?

The Skanzen showcases traditional Hungarian village life and architecture across different regions and periods. Although the historic houses themselves won’t be open yet during the pre-season, the sprawling 75-hectare grounds (part of the Danube-Ipoly National Park) offer a refreshing escape and a chance to connect with nature.

Why Visit in March?

  • Beat the Crowds: Enjoy a more peaceful experience before the main tourist season kicks in.
  • Embrace Spring: Witness the early signs of spring as nature awakens, with blooming snowdrops and other protected plants.
  • Family-Friendly Fun: The Skanzen offers safe, traffic-free walking paths ideal for families with young children and strollers.
  • Pet-Friendly: Bring your well-behaved, leashed furry friend along for the adventure!
  • Scenic Beauty: Hike up to the Mándok Church, the Skanzen’s highest point, or enjoy panoramic views of Szentendre and the surrounding hills from the “Tokaj vineyard” area.

Highlights for Tourists

  • Mesekert Playground (Story Garden): Delight children with themed play equipment inspired by Hungarian folktales like “The Little Round Dumpling” and “The Rooster of Ireg.” The stories are also displayed for reading.
  • Nature Trail: Discover local birdlife and learn about feeding and caring for birds at the educational trail created in partnership with the Hungarian Ornithological and Nature Conservation Association. You can even spot a hedgehog “nursery!”
  • Scenic Hike: Enjoy a 1.5-hour walk to the Mándok Church, a hidden wooden church surrounded by forests.
