Two Nordic Treasures Await You from Budapest: Tallinn and Billund

Traveling between Hungary and Transylvania is becoming simpler than ever. Starting March 31, 2026Wizz Air will operate daily flights between Budapest and Brașov, replacing the current four-weekly schedule. The move marks an important milestone not only for Hungarian and Romanian travelers but also for foreign tourists eager to explore Central Europe’s cultural treasures without long transfers or time-consuming routes.

A Rapidly Growing Air Connection

When the Budapest–Brașov route was launched in July 2024, few expected it to become one of the most popular flights serving the Székely Land (Szeklerland) region so quickly. In just over a year, passenger numbers have soared, prompting Wizz Air to expand operations from three to four weekly flights last autumn — and now to a full daily schedule.

This surge in demand reflects the growing popularity of Transylvania among European travelers, who are drawn to its fairytale-like landscapes, medieval towns, and rich cultural heritage. For Budapest, the new connection strengthens its position as a key transport and tourism hub in Central Europe, making it easier than ever to combine a city break along the Danube with an adventure in the Carpathian Mountains.

Brașov Airport: A Modern Gateway to Transylvania

The Brașov–Vidombák International Airport, one of Europe’s youngest aviation hubs, opened in June 2023 as Romania’s first newly built airport since the fall of communism. Designed as a greenfield project, it symbolizes regional development and innovation. The airport’s strategic location serves both Brașov and the wider Székely Land area, connecting local communities and international travelers alike.

In 2025, the airport recorded a 48 percent increase in passenger traffic, welcoming more than 337,000 travelers — a testament to growing regional mobility. Operated by the Brașov County Council, the airport expects continued growth in 2026, projecting up to one million passengers per year within the next few years.

Expanding Horizons and New Routes

Brașov Airport isn’t stopping with Budapest. From January 28, 2026, flights to Rome will operate three times a week, offering southern European connections for business and leisure travelers alike. Starting June 1, the route to Nuremberg will increase to six flights per week, linking Transylvania more closely with Germany’s industrial heartland and its large Hungarian and Romanian diasporas.

For visitors arriving from abroad, this network expansion opens up exciting new travel possibilities. Imagine flying into Brașov for a scenic Transylvanian road trip — through Bran Castle, Sighișoara, and the rolling Carpathians — before continuing to Budapest for its thermal baths, vibrant night cruises, and iconic architecture.

Strengthening Cultural and Economic Ties

The Budapest–Brașov route is more than a convenient travel option; it’s a bridge between cultures. The connection facilitates family visits, academic exchanges, and business travel across the Carpathian Basin, supporting both regional tourism and cross-border collaboration.

For tourists, this daily flight offers the flexibility to plan spontaneous weekend getaways or longer itineraries that blend two of Central Europe’s most enchanting destinations — Budapest, often dubbed the “Pearl of the Danube,” and Brașov, the “Gateway to Transylvania.”

Why This Matters for Tourists

Budapest’s growing flight connections make it an increasingly attractive starting point for exploring Central and Eastern Europe. With affordable direct links to Brașov, travelers can easily enjoy the best of both worlds: the cosmopolitan buzz of the Hungarian capital and the mystical charm of Transylvania’s mountains and fortified towns.

Whether you’re flying in for history, food, or folklore, this daily connection ensures that the journey is as seamless as the adventure itself. From now on, planning your European escape to Budapest — and beyond — just got a lot easier.
