Budapest Introduces MetroBus System to Enhance Public Transportation

In a significant move to improve public transportation and provide a viable alternative to car usage, Budapest is set to launch a new MetroBus system. This initiative aims to better connect the city’s outer districts with the metro network, offering faster and more convenient travel options for residents.

The MetroBus Concept

The MetroBus system is designed to:

  • Provide frequent, direct, and fast connections from outer districts to metro lines
  • Offer transfer-free journeys to reduce travel time
  • Create a more attractive public transport option to compete with private car use

According to the Budapest Transport Center (BKK), these buses will not necessarily operate on completely segregated bus rapid transit (BRT) corridors. Instead, they will focus on ensuring quick and reliable transportation in areas currently lacking adequate fixed-rail connections.

Data-Driven Planning

The BKK has invested significantly in strengthening its data-based planning capabilities, both technically and professionally. This approach has allowed for the development of a system that can greatly improve inner-city access from outer districts with minimal investment.

The planning process utilized over 10 million GPS check-ins to create an animation of Budapest’s public transport routes, providing valuable insights into travel patterns and needs.

The animation was created using over 10 million GPS data recordings showing the routes and positions of each transport vehicle.

Addressing Long-Standing Issues

Mayor Gergely Karácsony highlighted that while some parts of Budapest joined the city 75 years ago, public transportation in these areas still isn’t competitive enough with private car use. The MetroBus system is a step towards addressing this issue, offering a solution while longer-term rail development plans await funding and implementation.

Inspiration from Other Cities

The concept draws inspiration from several German cities, including Berlin, where MetroBus lines have been successfully connecting inner and outer city areas for decades.

Complementing Future Developments

While the city maintains its commitment to developing fixed-rail transport options, these projects require more time and significant funding, often relying on delayed EU resources. The MetroBus system is designed to provide an immediate improvement to public transport while these larger projects are in development.

Next Steps

The BKK is currently conducting necessary consultations with affected districts to fine-tune the MetroBus plans. This data-driven approach ensures that the new system will effectively influence travel habits and serve the needs of Budapest’s residents.

By introducing the MetroBus system, Budapest takes another step towards becoming a more accessible and sustainable city for all its residents, bridging the gap between outer districts and the city center through improved public transportation.
