What Is the NN City Run?

The NN City Run is one of Budapest’s most popular spring running events, organized by Maratonman, a well-established Hungarian race series. It kicks off the running season in style, drawing thousands of participants of all abilities to one of the most scenic stretches of the Danube riverfront. Whether you’re a first-time runner looking for a fun experience or a seasoned athlete chasing a personal best on the half marathon course, this event genuinely has something for everyone. The participant limit is set at 4,000 runners, so it has a great atmosphere without feeling overwhelming.

One of the highlights? Every finisher crosses the Liberty Bridge — yes, you actually run across one of Budapest’s most iconic landmarks. That alone makes this race unlike most city runs you’ll find anywhere in Europe.

Race Distances and Start Times

There are four distances to choose from, making the event accessible to a wide range of fitness levels:

  • 3 km Start Run — a fun, no-pressure race with no time limit and a finisher medal for everyone; starts at 08:30
  • 5 km — individual men’s and women’s race; starts at 09:00; cut-off time 50 minutes
  • 9.5 km (Manna ABC) — individual men’s and women’s race; starts at 10:00; cut-off time 1 hour 15 minutes
  • 21.1 km Half Marathon — individual and relay (2-person team); starts at 11:30; cut-off time 2 hours 45 minutes

The half marathon relay is a particularly fun option if you’re travelling with a friend — you each run roughly half the course and hand over a timing baton at the changeover zone on the embankment.

What’s Included With Your Entry

Eco vs. Premium Registration

For all distances except the Start Run, you can choose between two registration tiers. The Eco option covers race entry, chip timing, a finisher medal, full BioTechUSA refreshment stations, and medical support throughout the race. The Premium option adds a Mizuno technical running shirt to your race pack — the design for 2026 is still under wraps, which adds a nice element of surprise.

Finisher Medals and Awards

Every runner who finishes within the official cut-off time receives a unique finisher medal. The top three in each category also receive a trophy and a Maratonman race series voucher. Runners who finish outside the cut-off time are awarded a special Respect Medal at the finish area — a thoughtful touch that acknowledges everyone’s effort.

Free Race Photos

Your start and finish photos will be available to download for free from the NN Biztosító website after the event — a lovely bonus that not every race offers. Professional photographers from Futófotó will also be positioned along the route, with those shots available for purchase on futofoto.hu the week after the race.

Registration is still open at the race office and on-site on race day. Here’s a quick overview of the current pricing (on-site registration on March 29):

Getting There

The race takes place at Műegyetem rakpart, easily reachable by tram (lines 4 and 6 stop very close by) or metro. The organizers strongly recommend arriving by public transport, as the area around the race center will not be accessible by car on race day. If you’re driving into Budapest, use one of the city’s P+R park-and-ride facilities and continue by public transit.

Eco-Friendly Racing

One detail worth flagging for environmentally conscious runners: the NN City Run operates a no-single-use-cup policy at all refreshment stations. You’ll need to bring your own cup, bottle, or hydration pack to fill up along the route. It’s a small adjustment that makes a meaningful difference, and it’s become standard practice at Maratonman events.

A Perfect Reason to Visit Budapest in Spring

Even if competitive running isn’t usually your thing, the NN City Run is the kind of event that makes you want to participate just for the experience of it. Running along the Danube with the city’s grand architecture on one side and the river on the other, crossing the Liberty Bridge with thousands of fellow runners — it’s a genuinely memorable way to see Budapest from a completely different perspective. March in Budapest is a beautiful time to visit, with the city shaking off winter and the riverside promenades coming back to life. Whether you sign up for the 3 km fun run or go all-in on the half marathon, the NN City Run offers one of those mornings you’ll be glad you didn’t sleep through.
