What’s New at Budapest Airport: Travel Updates for International Visitors
Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport is introducing important changes in autumn 2025 that will affect how you travel. From new border control procedures to exciting flight destinations and seasonal dining options, here’s what international visitors need to know.
New EU Border System Launching in November
The European Union’s Entry/Exit System, known as EES, launches at Budapest Airport on November 18, 2025. This digital registration system fundamentally changes how non-EU travelers enter the Schengen area by replacing passport stamps with biometric data collection.
When you cross the border for the first time under the new system, authorities will create an individual file containing your passport information, the date and location of your border crossing, a facial photograph, and fingerprints from four fingers. During subsequent entries, you’ll only need to verify one piece of biometric data, either your facial image or fingerprint, potentially making future crossings faster.
The important news is that this system doesn’t affect EU citizens or those from Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. The EES exclusively applies to non-EU citizens who enter the Schengen area visa-free or with a Schengen visa for short stays of up to ninety days.
Budapest Airport is preparing with self-service kiosks for pre-registration, additional staff, and upgraded equipment including document readers, fingerprint scanners, and facial recognition devices. However, expect initial waiting times at passport control to increase, especially during the first few months as everyone adjusts to the new procedures. Airport authorities recommend arriving earlier than usual for international flights.
Looking ahead, another system called ETIAS will launch in late 2026, requiring visa-free tourists to apply online for travel authorization at a cost of twenty euros, valid for three years. Think of it as similar to the ESTA system for entering the United States.

Wizz Air has announced two new routes from Budapest that expand travel options to northern Europe, both operating year-round with affordable fares.

Flights operate three times weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, with tickets starting from 10,190 forints. Tickets start from 12,290 forints.
These routes reflect growing interest in Nordic travel. Wizz Air research shows the number of passengers heading north during summer increased nearly sevenfold over three years, while traffic to Copenhagen, Stockholm, Bergen, Trondheim, and Reykjavík grew forty-four percent between 2022 and 2024.
