New Seating Areas Revitalize Unused Spaces Along the Danube

In an effort to breathe new life into underutilized areas along the Danube River, the city of Budapest has recently unveiled new seating areas, grilling spots, and a staircase at prime locations. These new additions can be found at the southern tip of Margaret Island, beneath Margaret Bridge, and at the Vizafogó area near the Moscow Promenade.

The project, spearheaded by the Valyo Association in collaboration with VPI Beton and the Budapest City Hall, aims to transform these forgotten spaces into vibrant community hubs. The idea for the seating areas originated back in 2015 when Valyo, along with BME and S39, created similar installations at Gellért Square as part of the Beton Workshop. The overwhelming positive response from residents inspired the team to expand the concept to other locations along the Danube.

In December 2020, Valyo successfully applied for funding through the community budget to create seating areas on the slopes along the Danube banks. After months of idea development, planning, and navigating through the approval process, the project, now named “FICCENÉS,” has finally come to fruition.

The new seating areas, grilling spots, and staircase not only provide a comfortable place for residents and visitors to relax and enjoy the stunning views of the city but also encourage social interaction and community building. The concrete furniture, designed in the colors of Margaret Bridge, serves as a unique and eye-catching feature that complements the surrounding landscape.

To celebrate the completion of the project, an inauguration ceremony is being planned, complete with grilling and a toast to the city’s newest additions. The Valyo Association extends its gratitude to the numerous individuals and organizations who contributed to the success of this initiative, including the project manager Tömör Miklós, designer Kornai-Varga Dávid, consultant Nagy-Mihály Márk, and the many others who offered their support and enthusiasm throughout the process.

As Budapest continues to evolve and grow, projects like these demonstrate the city’s commitment to creating inclusive, functional, and beautiful public spaces that enhance the quality of life for all its residents.
