From Chocolate Factory to Chic Hotel: The YAH Hotel Set to Open This Summer

Budapest’s hotel scene is about to get a stylish new addition. The former Stühmer Chocolate Factory, a landmark art deco building in the city’s 8th district, is being transformed into the four-star YAH Hotel. The renovation, undertaken by SWIETELSKY Magyarország, is preserving the building’s rich history while creating a modern and inviting space for travelers.
A Building with a Sweet Past
The building at Szentkirályi utca 8 has been a site of confectionery production since 1868. In 1928, the Stühmer Chocolate Factory, one of Hungary’s most successful 19th-century enterprises, established its headquarters and factory there. Designed by renowned art deco architect Kende Ferenc, the building’s facade featured a retail store in the center, entrances to the factory and director’s residence on the sides, and references to the “Százszorszép” (Daisy) desserts in the lower levels. In 1996, it was converted into an office building. Now, under the direction of YOU ARE HUNGARY Kft. and designed by D55 Építész Iroda, the building is being reborn as a hotel.

Challenges and Triumphs of Renovation
The transformation hasn’t been without its challenges. Gyécsek Hajnalka, the chief construction manager at SWIETELSKY Magyarország, described the structural issues and logistical difficulties involved in revitalizing a building constructed in various stages and with different techniques. The team had to work alongside structural redesigns and reinforcing work. The narrow street presented an additional hurdle, requiring creative solutions like maximizing the use of a tower crane to lift materials directly from delivery trucks into the building.
Preserving Heritage, Embracing Modernity
Despite the complexities, the renovation is progressing smoothly. The facade, including the main staircase railing and street-facing windows, is protected by district regulations. The original windows were replaced with plastic ones during the office building era, but the street-facing facade will now feature wooden windows that align with the building’s historical style.
A Contemporary Hotel Experience
The YAH Hotel will feature 94 rooms, including double rooms, family rooms, and apartments. Some rooms will even have elevated bathrooms, creating a unique layout where the bed is positioned under the bathroom space. The hotel’s interiors will boast a youthful and contrasting design, with pastel walls complemented by bold, metal-framed furniture and atmospheric lighting. The basement will house a cinema and fitness center, while the ground floor will feature a lobby, hotel restaurant, and a glazed breakfast area.
Nearing Completion
With construction currently 85% complete, the YAH Hotel is expected to open its doors this summer. This exciting project represents a harmonious blend of historical preservation and modern hospitality, promising a unique and memorable experience for visitors to Budapest.
