Discover the Delights of Budapest's Open Markets Day

Hey there, food lovers and adventure seekers! Have you heard about the fantastic Open Markets Day happening in Budapest? It’s a day filled with exciting activities, delicious treats, and a chance to explore the vibrant markets of the city. So, mark your calendars for September 20th and get ready for a fun-filled day!

This year, the Open Markets Day is taking place at 19 locations across the country, with 11 markets participating in Budapest alone. The event coincides with the Cultural Heritage Day, making it an even more special occasion. The motto for this year is “the market is for everyone,” with a spotlight on grapes as the star ingredient.

Let’s dive into what Budapest has in store for you on this incredible day. The Vámház körúti Nagycsarnok (Great Market Hall) is celebrating its 30th anniversary since its renovation by the Budapest City Council in 1994. You’ll have the opportunity to join guided architectural tours of the building, learn about the market’s operations, conscious shopping, and food safety through presentations and workshops. Plus, don’t miss out on the special treats and tastings at the Street of Flavors throughout the week, and the Autumn Fair happening all month long in the main aisle of the Great Market Hall. To top it off, there will be a concert by the Budapest Jazz Orchestra Combo featuring Orsi Urbán and Bálint Gájer at 4 pm, followed by a screening of award-winning films from Friss Hús at 6 pm.

But wait, there’s more! The other markets managed by BUDAPEST VÁSÁRCSARNOKAI Kft. have their own exciting lineup. At the Rákóczi téri Vásárcsarnok, you can enjoy concerts from the Józsefváros Jazz Festival. The Fehérvári úti Vásárcsarnok invites you to explore behind the scenes, while the Bosnyák téri Vásárcsarnok focuses on grapes, with vendors offering special deals. The Kórház utcai Vásárcsarnok (Óbuda Market) will have a grape and fruit market, as well as a fish market and exhibition.

For those interested in architecture and design, the Tétényi úti Üzletközpont and the Flórián téri Üzletközpont have collaborated with the Contemporary Architecture Center. Young designers, artists, and creators will gather at the Pecha Kucha open forum in Újbuda to showcase their work, with a focus on Kelenföld and the blue building of the Tétényi shopping center. At the Flórián téri Üzletközpont, visitors can learn about the history of the first shopping center in Hungary and discover Roman-era historical monuments.

Foodies, you won’t want to miss the Lehel Csarnok, where you can learn the secrets of grape processing, how to make grape juice, and the uses of various tools like the hydrometer, crusher, and vat. Take a tour of the building led by the market supervisor. For a relaxing evening of grape harvest shopping, head to the Hunyadi téri piac for fresh lángos and wine tastings. At the Fény Street Market, enjoy grape juice tastings alongside Buda Szóda, with street musicians adding to the lively atmosphere.
