Christmas Trains Trough Buda Hills

The Budapest Children’s Railway offers a delightful winter experience for passengers during the holiday season. With decorated carriages and special events, it provides an excellent opportunity for families to enjoy a scenic train ride through the Buda Hills.

Festive Trains and Schedule

From December 27, 2024, to January 5, 2025, the railway operates daily on a winter weekend schedule:

  • Trains depart hourly from Hűvösvölgy between 9:10 AM and 4:10 PM
  • Departures from Széchenyihegy run from 10:03 AM to 5:03 PM

A special illuminated train, adorned with external lighting, departs from Hűvösvölgy at 10 minutes past even hours and from Széchenyihegy at 03 minutes past odd hours.

Holiday Schedule Modifications

  • December 24: Last trains depart earlier (Hűvösvölgy at 12:10 PM, Széchenyihegy at 1:03 PM)
  • January 1: First trains depart one hour later than usual (Hűvösvölgy at 10:10 AM, Széchenyihegy at 11:03 AM)

Special Events

Vintage Steam Train Rides

On December 28, 29, and January 4, 5, nostalgic steam locomotive trains will operate alongside regular services.

Railway Vehicle Exhibition

On December 27, from 10 AM to 4 PM, Csillebérc station will host a special exhibition featuring various railway vehicles:

  • Diesel locomotives: Mk49, Mk45, and the red Mk48
  • Steam locomotive
  • Lillafüred motorcar
  • Green C50 locomotive with two blue auxiliary cars

Activities for Children

  • Paper craft activities in one of the salon cars
  • LEGO railway display in another salon car
  • Film screenings in the waiting room
  • Food and warm beverages available for purchase

Nostalgic Train Services

On the day of the exhibition, nostalgic trains will run every 40 minutes between the event site and Széchenyihegy terminal, alternating between a steam locomotive, the Lillafüred motorcar, and the green C50 locomotive.
