Budapest Play Returns With Its Biggest Applicant Pool Yet

Nearly 400 street musicians have signed up for this year’s edition of Budapest Play, the city’s street music festival and competition, and the full lineup drops this Thursday, July 23. A Festival With Growing Momentum

Budapest Play, officially known as the Budapest Street Music Festival and Competition, was first launched by the city’s Mayor’s Office in 2024 and has since grown into one of the capital’s most anticipated summer cultural events. Registration for this year’s edition opened on June 23 and closed just days ago, with an astonishing 383 musicians and duos applying to take part. That number grew fast, jumping from just 120 applicants in the very first week to nearly 400 by the deadline, a clear sign of how much the festival’s reputation has built since its debut.

The idea behind the festival is refreshingly simple: turn the entire city into an open-air stage. Rather than confining performances to a single park or square, organizers are spreading the action across ten of Budapest’s most recognizable public spaces, letting passersby stumble into live music wherever their day takes them.

Where and When to Catch the Action

The festival runs across two stretches this summer, July 30 to 31 and August 1, followed by a second wave from August 6 to 8. Performances will pop up at ten locations spanning both the inner city and outer districts, including Deák Square, Batthyány Square, Fény Street Market, Nagyvárad Square, Fábián Juli Square, the plaza in front of the ALLEE Shopping Center, the entrance to Margaret Island, Örs Vezér Square, Keleti Railway Station, and the riverside Rakpart–Meder area. Every musician selected for the festival will perform twice, once at a central downtown location and once at one of the outer-district spots, giving both tourists sticking to the city center and locals in residential neighborhoods a chance to catch live performances.

A Competition With Real Stakes

Budapest Play isn’t just about ambient background music, it’s also a genuine competition with meaningful prizes attached. Audiences get to vote for their favorite performers throughout the six festival days, and the artist with the most public votes earns a coveted slot at this year’s Sziget Festival, one of Europe’s largest and most famous music festivals, held on an island in the Danube every August. Beyond the audience favorite, a professional jury will select an additional five to six musicians to join the Sziget street music program, while the strongest overall performers will also receive valuable professional prizes.

Those prizes go well beyond bragging rights. Winners get access to Budapest Park’s ParkLab program and Backstage Camp, studio recording time at Pannónia Studio, and instrument vouchers, plus professional mentoring to help them produce an original song after the competition wraps up. The judging panel includes Andrea Biczó, PR manager at Budapest Park, alongside music producer, songwriter and performer Áron Somody and musician and songwriter Mátyás Szepesi.
