Unmissable Frida Kahlo Photo Exhibition Coming to Budapest
For fans of Frida Kahlo or Mexican art and culture, an unmissable new exhibition is coming to Budapest’s Mai Manó House photography center from October 18, 2024 through January 12, 2025. “Frida Kahlo: Her Photos” will showcase 241 never-before-published personal photographs from the iconic Mexican artist’s private collection.
When Kahlo passed away in 1954, her husband Diego Rivera donated their Mexico City home (the famed Blue House) to be turned into a museum honoring her life and work. However, Rivera requested that part of Kahlo’s personal archive – containing over 6,000 photos, drawings, letters, and personal items – be locked away from public view in the home’s bathroom.
This mythical bathroom cache remained hidden for 50 years until the archive was finally opened in 2003. Photographer and curator Pablo Ortiz Monasterio has carefully selected 241 of Kahlo’s most cherished personal photos from this collection to create an intimate look into the artist’s life and relationships.
The exhibition is divided into six sections: Roots, The Blue House, Politics/Revolutions/Diego, The Broken Body, Frida’s Beloved, and Photography. In addition to images by famous photographers like Man Ray and Edward Weston, it features Kahlo’s own photographs which she modified, cropped, or dedicated – treating them as artworks themselves.
This will be the first time this acclaimed exhibition comes to Budapest. For Kahlo fans and Mexican culture enthusiasts, it offers a rare glimpse into the private world of one of the 20th century’s most celebrated artists. Open Tuesday-Sunday from noon-7pm, advance tickets are available now. Don’t miss this special opportunity!
