The Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden is one of the oldest zoos in the world. On August 9, 1866, the zoo opened its gates to the public for the first time. This year, the zoo is celebrating its 158th birthday. To commemorate this milestone, the zoo has planned a series of special programs and events in addition to the usual summer experience programs on August 9th.

Most of these events will take place on one of the shaded promenades starting from the Main Gate. There will be themed guided tours, a craft table for children, and an exciting treasure hunt game throughout the garden with small prizes.

Several partners will also join the celebration, including the “Egy Csepp Figyelem Alapítvány” (One Drop of Attention Foundation) offering screening tests, the Móra Publishing House with an interactive children’s activity corner and storytelling, and the Crime Prevention Department of the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) with puzzles, quizzes, a comic book on the “Five Animal Freedoms,” and smart games.

The Budapest Zoo has been a beloved institution in the heart of the city for over a century and a half. It has provided generations of visitors with the opportunity to learn about and appreciate the diverse wildlife from around the world. The 158th anniversary celebration is a testament to the zoo’s enduring legacy and its commitment to educating and entertaining the public while promoting conservation efforts.

As the zoo marks this significant milestone, visitors can look forward to a day filled with fun, learning, and a deeper appreciation for the incredible animals that call the Budapest Zoo home.
